Jan. 27

Dear Corinne,

Collin came to my window at midnight, and I snuck out. He held my hand as we walked, and he brought me to the park, where there were white Christmas lights strung up between two trees, over a bench. He led me to them and we sat down.

Me: wow. This is beautiful.

The lights reflected off of the snow, and made everything else beyond it fade into darkness. It felt like our own little territory- like the entrance to Narnia or something. Magical.

Collin: it's almost as beautiful as you.

He took a bag out from under the bench and took a thermos and two mugs from inside it.

Collin: hot chocolate?

He poured me some and we sat there, sipping our drinks.

Collin: you're beautiful, you know?

Me: thanks.

Collin: you don't have to change yourself.

Me:

Collin: and you don't have to put up with any shit.

Me: I don't really want to talk about it.

Collin:

Me:

Collin: okay.

Then I leaned into him and everything was alright.

But when I got home, I walked through the back door, right into my father. He grabbed my arm and slammed me against a wall.

Dad: WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?

Me:

Dad: you're grounded!

Me: I'm already grounded!

Dad: you're double grounded! You're grounded for the rest of your life!

Me: you can't do that!

Dad: were you out to see Collin? Is that it?

Me:

Dad: he's bad news!

Me: I can't live without him!

Dad: don't give me that crap! You're a piece of work, Leigh. A piece of work.

Me: you don't know anything about me!

Then he slapped me. My dad doesn't hit. He's the gentlest guy there is. But here I was with his handprint across my face. I burst into tears and crumbled onto the floor.

Dad: more like your mother everyday.

Me: No!

Then I realized- 7 years ago today is when she left us.

Love,

Leigh
