And BOOM!
Light blossomed from deep within me. Such concentrated energy any on-lookers would have been blinded. But my eyes were fine. Better then fine actually. It was suddenly like I had unlock something deep inside me that had always wished to be free. My eyes were open to something I had always wished to be there, but had been scared to see. The feeling was constant and overwhelming. I could feel the bones in my broken arm knitting back together. It felt like the bone was melting back into its original shape and becoming stronger than it had been.
I was held suspended above the ground in a bubble of white light, dispelling any trace of darkness. Gradually the power faded and I lay on the frost covered ground.
Pitch seemed to have gone, running like the coward he is when faced with someone fighting back, and Jack lay a little way away.
He wasn't moving.
The world seemed to stop. I ran to his side, the very particles of air holding me back. Jack must have been caught up in the blast of energy. Had I hurt him?
"Jack." I said like a mourner leaning over him. My tears were spilling down on to his chest. I couldn't forgive myself if I had hurt him. I would rather die than that. "Please don't leave me, oh god please don't!"
He moaned gently, "It'll be a long time 'till you get rid of me Snowflake."
I threw my arms around him and wept like a child. The realization of what had just happened hitting me like a hurricane.
"Jack, what's happened to me?" I sobbed into his chest.
"I don't know," he replied simply. "I don't know."

He flew me home, over the town. The view was spectacular, the stars were back and seemed closer than before like you could reach out and touch them. The town below looked like nothing more then a child's play thing, the people with as little consequence as bugs scuttling on the surface. But I didn't see a thing. My brain had shut down. The world flashed past me, but I could no longer engage in it. Locked inside my own head.
When we entered my room I got off of Jack. As he closed the widow I leaned my back against the wall, sliding down it until I was curled up on the floor. Jack sat beside me for a few moments, wanting to offer sympathy but not sure how, then tried to put an arm round my shoulder. I skooched away.
"Natalia," he said, concerned. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing Jack it's just..." I sighed shakily. "I want you to stay away from me. Just until we see what exactly my...powers are."
He tried moving towards me, to try and reassure me that everything was fine. But it wasn't, he knew that as well as I did. I stood and crossed to the other side of the room.
"Natalia..."
"No Jack," I said raising my hands. "Just please, I don't want to hurt you."
Jack looked down for a moment, concerned and pained. He seemed to make a decision, setting his staff on the carpet and standing, a look of complete seriousness on his usually jokey face. Without a word he started coming towards me.
"Jack no, I'm serious. Jack just stay away from me please! Please!" I started screaming at him, panic flooding though me, tears streaming down my face.
But he wouldn't listen. He never does. With each step he took I pleaded for him to stop, begged him to get away from me.
When he got close enough, he wrapped his arms around me like a protective shield against the world itself. I pounded on his chest with my fists but there was nothing behind it. No strength, no furry, just me and Jack.
"You're not getting away from me that easy Snowflake." he whispered to me, stroking my short black hair. "Never again."
I looked up. The moonlight streaming through the window set his features aglow and his eyes were soft and kind. He wiped the tears from my eyes with his thumb and I could feel tiny ice crystals following its path, only to be melted by the heat of my skin.
Like a snowflake, I fell. My knees buckled. I was done, both physically and emotionally, more then before. Jack picked me up and lay me down on my bed. In desperation I grabbed at his hoodie.
"Please don't go," I pleaded in a whisper.
Jack smiled, "never Snowflake."
He lay down beside me, holding me close. I pressed my face into the blue material of his hoodie, all the while he stroked my hair. There was an unspoken promise in his actions. That he would never let anyone hurt me and if they ever did, he would make them pay for it. And even without him saying it I believed in it. I believed in him.
