It was dark. A bottomless well of nothing, but I had been here before. And this time it wasn't so dark. I looked at my limbs. They were ever so slightly infused with the slightest white light. I could see about 5 paces in front of me.

"Hey kid!" I called to the void beyond me, hoping more than anything she was still there.

"Hello," came a reply.

"Hi there, I'm back. Are you still in the same place?"

"I think so. You shouldn't have come back here."

I didn't know how I had gotten there in the first place, but I didn't need to tell her that. "You let me worried about that. Keep talking to me."

As I ran, she was wittering about nothing and everything. About school and friends and this brother. She couldn't talk enough about him.

The distance seemed shorter than it had been before, but that could be down to the fact I had some idea where I was going. I entered the cave, only just remembering to stop before I ran in to the abyss below.

There she was, the little girl across a fall that seemed infinitely deep. The ledge she was curled upon seemed smaller, more likely to tumble into the nothingness below. She was curled there, obviously weak. How long had she been out there?

"Hi there," I waved, trying to keep to concern from my voice.

She struggled to her elbows. "You've got to get away. The monsters will get you."

I smiled, "they didn't get me last time, did they?"

She giggled, and the sound warmed my heart. It meant she hadn't given up yet.

"You sound like my brother," she said so quietly I almost didn't hear her.

"Who's your brother?" I asked looking for some way to get across. There was a thin walk way I hadn't seen before. Strange that?

The girl scrunched her face up in concentration. "I don't know. I don't remember."

I moved to the bridge. It didn't look safe, but I didn't have a choice. "Tell me what you do remember then."

The girl bit her lip, "well, he's a real joker. Always playing pranks. But he always has a way of getting out of trouble. Devils luck, Mama says."

"Anything else," I said as I edged my way out on to the walk way, arms outstretched for balance.

"He always knows the right thing to say when I'm sad or board. He could get anyone to laugh. There was this old lady in out village who, it was said, hadn't laughed in over 3 generations. My brother took this as a challenge. He told her one of his crummy jokes. Something about a bear and a mouse and she laughed so hard she cried. She was a lot happier and nicer after that."

I smiled, I was almost there now. Just a few more steps. "He sounds great. I'd love to meet him. What's your name by the way?"

The girl grinned, "Emma. Emma Overland."

I stopped, "what?"

And the rock cracked and I fell once more.
