I woke up on the bed, feeling like I had been flung there by a very angry giant throwing a tantrum.
"Jack!" I cried, bolting up right. I don't know why I yelled his name, really. I just... needed him to be there.
He did not disappoint.
"Hay," he sat up next to me on the bed. "It's okay Snowflake, I'm here."
I was soothed by his words, sitting on the bed beside him. Feeling my heart slow and my breath calm.
I took a moment to realize, with the speed of which Jack had reacted to my cry, he had been awake before me. He had been watching me sleep? My heart rate immediately sped up again.
"Did you have a nightmare?" He asked gently, wrapping his arms around me.
I thought about telling him about what I had seen in my dream, but I couldn't be sure. Not yet anyway. I just needed a little more time.
I nodded, looking up at him. It wasn't technically lying, just not giving the whole story. "Is that a bad thing?"
Jack frowned, the action didn't suit him. "No, it's not good. That's how he gets to you Snowflake."
"What, Pitch?"
"Yes, Pitch." Jack frowned some more. "I don't think it's safe for you here. How would you feel about going up to the North Pole with me?"
I thought about it. I didn't want to cause any trouble, and I didn't want my Dad to worry. Well he wouldn't be worried, he would just get angry at me and ground me for a month (though honestly this isn't much of punishment as I don't go anywhere).
I stopped then, realizing that if Pitch was right, my Dad wasn't my Dad. More than that, my cousins weren't my cousins. My Babushka wasn't my Babushka. I had no blood family. (Unless you counted a man who lived in a rock thousands of miles away).
"Natalia," Jack said, clicking his fingers in my face.
I snapped out of my whole world crumbling around me and looked at Jack. He was being so calm about this, concern etched into his brow. He was the only thing keeping me together right now. He had a way of making everything seem fine, even when it wasn't. "I'm okay," I said and meant it.
"You sort of zoned out there."
"Just thinking, and I agree. It's not good for me to stay here. Just give me some time to get some stuff together."
Jack nodded, "I've got to see North about getting a snow globe anyway. We've seen that flying and you aren't the best friends, but I'll get someone to watch you. Sound good?"
I nodded, "yeah, that sounds fine."
So Jack left, telling me to lock my room and window and not to open for anyone other than him and the friend he was sending. (Though how was I supposed to know who the friend was when he was acting so bloody mysterious and wouldn't tell me who they were or what they looked like?).
I busied myself to leave. Chances are I would not be coming back, so I only packed the essentials. A few changes of clothes, tooth brush/paste, laptop and charger (I mean come on) and a few books. (Quite a few) (I don't have a kindle so that meant half a library also I have to take sketch books everywhere I go). I also packed a very special delivery for one of the guardians (I did want to make a good impression after all). It was a miracle it all fit in my bag, but I managed.
After a while I had nothing else to pack, but I knew something was missing. And worst thing was I knew what it was. My Dad, well, who I'd believed to have been my Dad. He may not have been the best father in the world but the man had still raised me as his own for over 15 years, even though he knew I wasn't his. I at least owed him a 'Goodbye'.
