Katherine’s eyes flashed open to see the bright morning sun over her. She sat and rubbed her eyes blurrily, “hmm,” She looked over to see Emily still sleeping and David walking out of the house whistling holding a cup of coffee.

“Here.” He said and handed it to her then knelt down to shake her mom from her slumber. Katherine nodded and gave him a assuring smile as she glanced sadly at Tristan’s picture. She felt her body stiffen as her mind showed her images of last night. She gave an involuntary shiver then wrapped her hands around the coffee mug, with a long sigh she stood up letting the blanket fall to cover her feet.

“Mom,” Katherine said and started to shake her until she groaned and flipped over. Emily bolted up as soon as she felt the cold concrete touch her back.

“Waa?” Katherine laughed then glanced down at her watch to see the time.

“Shit!” She cried she was late very late. She ran past David and Emily and straight into the house. Any other time she would have slowed down at admire the smooth dark floorboards and light painted walls but she was late.  Katherine barged into her room and kicked down her sweatpants and struggled out of the tank top.             “Shit, shit, shit.” She kept muttering while moving swiftly to her closet and pulling out jeans and a dark blue top. She jumped into them then raced to the bathroom to brush her teeth and comb her curly black hair. She raced down the stairs in record time and zipped out of the house nearly forgetting to grab her sneakers. She hopped on one foot while pulling on a sneaker and having a granola bar stuck in her teeth.

She looked up at the sound of someone laughing. “What?” She growled at her mom as she started on the other sneaker.

“Honey, its Saturday.” Her mom said while laughing.

“What!” Katherine growled suddenly she was angry; furious for no reason. She threw up her hands and stormed toward the door.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” Her mom shouted after her.

“Hey. Where’s the fire?” David asked her as she pushed past him. Katherine stopped to look up at him her dark blue eyes burning into his.

“I need him.” Was all she could say before she pushed out the door.

“What’s that supposed to mean?!” David cried after her as she ran to her car, which David had brought home the day before, and yanked the door open.

She flipped down the view thingy , she never did learn what it was called, and the keys fell into her lap. She threw the car into drive and pulled out of the driveway and onto the highway, she was trembling, nervously she turned up the radio to hear the song Apologize by One Republic. Like that helped she shut the radio off and just kept driving until she reached a deserted street.  She had no idea but something was urging her to floor it, let the car shoot forward at breakneck pace.

She did. The car tires screamed as they caught hold on the asphalt and the car flew forward like a cheetah. Katherine felt her body slammed back against the seat from the force, burning sadness was brewing in her. She felt as if with the death of her brother she’d lost everything that ever mattered. He was gone. He had been the only person who ever believed in her.

She slammed the brakes down and the car swerved and nearly  broadsided. She swore for just a moment that she was back in Tristan’s car and that the windshield exploded in her face. Then she was throw back into the present and the car was sitting in a cemetery, she’d unconsciously driven down the old road to the graveyard. Shivering she stepped out of the car into the now gloomy morning, dark clouds rolled in form the north and the wind ever so slightly picked up. She wrapped her arms around herself as she picked her way over the gravestones to one sitting by itself in the corner. She reached out to left her fingers dance over the name, Tristan, she felt more tears fall.
