Chris's POV
A tear escaped my eye as I heard Nicole saying, “This is all because of you. I have no family because of you! I hate you, Chris Evans, I hate you. I don't want to see you ever again! I don't want to be your mate!" She ran to her bedroom as I looked Claire, who gave me a sorry expression. But I had better things to do than pity myself. I walked up to Nicole's room. On the side of the staircase I glanced at he various photographs, Nicole and her family in happier times. And seeing those made my heart sank. My actions had led to this consequence, I don't even know how many families like hers have I destroyed. And now I can't even make it all right. Nicole had every right to say those words, even if my wolf was hurt.
I could hear her sobs from the other side. "Nicole, babe please open the door, I'm sorry. I know sorry won't suffice but I am your mate, please try to understand."
"Go to hell! I told you I don't want to see you!" My wolf growled, not liking this behavior. He is used to being dominant after all. But I suppressed all that anger and said, “Okay baby, but come down soon. You haven't eaten anything since fifteen hours."
I heard her scoff mockingly. "As if eating would replace the loss of my family."
"No, it won't, but...........just come down soon, okay? I hate to see you this way."
"You should've thought of that well in advance."
I didn't say anything after that, I knew she wouldn't like if I did. I just slid down against the door. Knowing that she's there on the other side and okay too would be a great deal right now. I heard the doorbell ring and Claire's shuffling around, but didn't mind getting up from my spot.
"Chris, some people are here to see you!" I heard Claire call me.
"Tell them to leave their number, I'll see them tomorrow at the office," I replied.
"Um, I doubt they're here for office work........."
I got up and glided down the stairs to see two men sitting on the couch. Claire was standing in front of them quietly. Both of the men were on our side during the war. Apparently, they were brothers who had their parents killed. Damon came in through the door, panting. "I'm sorry for being late but I had to run the whole way here, couldn't find the keys to my car. Strange, isn't it?" Damon said. Damon and I were friends since we learnt to speak. He also lost his family the same time I lost mine, of course. He was still mate-less, all whatever you call their kind. He was the optimistic one, he always knew there was greener grass somewhere. We had the same fire though, same interests, Claire called us "The Twisted Brothers". The one thing I loved the most about Damon was that he never lost his calm, EVER. It's like he's got a switch there somewhere. And of course, like me, he's bee quite a ladies' man too.
"It's okay, Day. So why are we here gentlemen?" I asked, looking at Roy and Riley, the two brothers.
"Even I'd like to know," Damon said.
"We have a proposition for you, Roy said, " We'd like you to be our new Alpha." He smiled expectantly.
"Way to go, Chris!" Claire said and hugged me, but I pushed her away from me gently.
"I'm sorry, what?" I asked confusedly.
"Well, the pack members decided that since you helped us win this war in like a major way, no one would be more appropriate to be the Alpha than you," Roy replied.
"But we're rogues, we don't EVER live in a pack."
"After the war was over, everyone thought that it'd be better if we live as a pack and settle down. And hey, you're maybe the first person who didn't do the happy dance after he got his alpha title."
I thought of Nicole, she'd hate me more than she already does if she gets to know that I'm the alpha of this region now, she'll never come to forgive me. "I can't," I said in a small voice.
"Are you crazy?! Why the hell not?" Damon asked.
"Because I don't want to."
"Chris," Damon said through gritted teeth, “don’t try to vex me. I know you don't want to, but why?"
"That's confidential."
"And I am your best friend!" He threw his hands up in exasperation. Then something clicked him. "It's because of her isn't it? You're doing this so that Nicole doesn't get angry."
"Maybe. So what?" I shrugged. Roy and Riley watched our exchange interestedly.
"Chris, you're taking to much of her, okay? I mean, she should see her mate before everything, but she's not," Claire said.
"She lost her parents for God's sake! We were there too, Claire, I thought atleast you'd understand," I said. I was more disappointed than angry, I couldn't believe Claire thought so.
"Chris, it's not like that," she said in a softer tone, "I just want to see you happy and once she knows the truth-"
"No, she won't," I snapped.
"But-"
"Claire, we'll talk of this later."
"Okay. Just please, accept the alpha title."
"Chris, we actually aren't giving you a choice here. We're just here to inform you of this. You are the alpha now, the whole pack, or whatever whether you like it or not," Roy said.
"The hell with this! We're rogues! The reason we left a pack was 'cause we didn't want complications-" i retorted.
"Chris, people need security and for that they need you."
I thought for a moment, the people need me. They need security, but my mate, she won't be happy. This is some serious dilemma, but people matter, my pack matters too and sometimes we have to sacrifice, besides I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to win Nicole's love. I didn't know how this sudden feeling to protect had risen. Maybe I really am their alpha. So without anymore delay, I muttered, “Fine, I am in." A smile crept on everyone's face.
"Alright, we're so glad to have you, alpha. Now the only thing is that you have to give us your thumbs- up for the beta, “Roy continued," and he's none other than Damon."
"What? Me?" Damon looked confused.
"There could be no better choice, Damon was kinda my right hand during the preparation of the war," I said and smiled at Damon.
"Good, the ceremony will take place in the forest clearing at midnight today, “Riley said getting up, Roy followed his lead. Then he stopped in his tracks and said,"Um, I don't know if it's the right time or not but usually at the ceremonies, the Luna is supposed to come too so........."
"Who? Nicole? I'm not sure........but I'll ask her anyway."
"Okay. Thank you for giving us your precious time, alpha."
"Yeah, bye."
The brothers left and Damon slapped me on the back."Whoa dude, you just bagged a jackpot! A sexy mate and a sexy title.....Not bad."
"Don't you dare call her sexy! And I'm not sure of Nicole, she's really sad, I should go check on her," I said. My mate. My wolf was getting a bit antsy. He wanted his mate near him, and he was begging me to do something quick.
"Chris I think you should tell her the truth about the pack, she deserves to know and moreover she'll realize that this war wasn't your fault. They had it coming," Claire said, rubbing my shoulder.
"No, Claire, she'll be more dejected if she gets to know."
"But Chris, her parents are dead-"
"My point exactly. Her parents are dead; she only has their memories now. We should let these memories stay beautiful. As for me, I'll find another way to win her." I gave her a small smile.
"Okay. But if she treats you worse than this, I'm gonna tell her myself."
"Claire."
"Okay, fine. I won't breathe a word. Happy?"
"You're the best."
Just then I heard a loud crash upstairs and a sudden feeling of dread crept into my mind as I bolted my way upstairs.
