Taylor yawned. University was fun, and even gave her independence but boy, was it stressful. It was ten o'clock at night and she was ready to collapse after working for hours. She tossed her pen on to the desk, done with her assignment for the day. She was too tired for this.
A knock at her apartment door snapped her from her thoughts. Why was someone knocking at this sort of time? When she opened her door she was surprised to see her neighbour from across the hall, another NYU student.
"Hello?" Taylor asked. The girl stood in front of her was tall, with shoulder length blonde hair and mesmerising green eyes. She could be a model Taylor thought.
"Hi there, Taylor is it? I'm hosting a party at my place tomorrow night and so I thought I should warn you that it'll be pretty loud." The girl spoke. She stood with an easy smile and confident stance. She seemed friendly to Taylor, which was strange, since according to her room mate Cara she was known as a partier and a bit of a rebel.
"Okay, cool, thanks for warning me" Taylor replied, slightly intimidated by her neighbour. This girl was seriously pretty.
"No problem..." The girl trailed off. She suddenly seemed a little nervous. "If you want, you can come."
The shorter blonde wasn't sure what to say. "I'm not sure, I don't really go to parties..."
"Okay well, if you change your mind, the party starts at nine." The blonde smiled and turned away. "My names Karlie, by the way." She said before disappearing into her apartment without a goodbye.
---
"Come on Tay, we should go! It'll be fun, you need to let loose a little!" Cara encouraged. Ever since Taylor had told Cara about her brief encounter with their neighbour, Cara hadn't let the situation go.
"You weren't even invited Cara." Taylor reasoned.
"Like that's ever stopped me before." Cara smirked. Taylor rolled her eyes. "Come on Tay, just for an hour or something. If you seriously hate it after that, you can leave. It's just across the hall."
After a long pause, the taller girl finally answered. "Okay" she said reluctantly "but only because you won't shut up." Cara cheered and the two went off to get ready for the party. Taylor smiled slightly...at least she'd get to maybe talk to Karlie again.
---
Taylor knocked on the door apprehensively. Her heart was beating quite fast, but she couldn't tell whether that was because she was nervous of the party, of nervous of seeing her blonde neighbour. The door was opened for them and Karlie stood there, dressed in black that clad tightly to her body in all the right places.
"Hey guys! Come in and have some fun!" Karlie let the two girls in and gave Taylor a look. "I'm glad you could make it." She said while smiling, before turning around and walking off into the rest of the apartment to continue partying. It left Taylor with her stomach doing backflips.
The music was loud, and the smell of alcohol was overwhelming. Cara was already in her zone, scouting out the hot girls.
"Hey Tay, there's some girls over there from one of my classes, I'm gonna go say hi to them. Back in a sec!" Cara wondered off, her gaze set on a specific group. Taylor chuckled, fully knowing that Cara wouldn't be back to talk to her anytime soon. Taylor awkwardly wondered over to where the kitchen seemed to be. Groups of people were chatting and laughing and copious amounts of alcohol were being passed around. A makeshift bar was in one corner of the room, and Taylor helped herself to a glass of something that didn't look too intoxicating.
"Hey there" said a deep voice. Taylor turned around to see a dude smiling down at her with a serious fuckboy haircut. "Wanna dance, beautiful?"
"I'll pass thanks" Taylor replied timidly.
"Come on babe, dance with me" the guy smirked at Taylor with a hungry look in his eye. He reached a slimy hand on Taylor's waist, trying to pull her in close. Taylor shook his hand off of her.
"I said no thanks, babe." She voiced with more confidence, the final word dipping with sarcasm.
"Hey Taylor, long time no see!" Karlie ran up to Taylor and hugged her. Taylor furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. "Come on, Gigi wants to see you! Oh, hi Calvin." Karlie lied smoothly. Taylor tried not to laugh, realising what Karlie was doing.
"Hi, Karlie." Calvin said awkwardly before sauntering away from them. Karlie seemed to intimidate everyone.
"Sorry about that, but I didn't know how else to get him to stop being so rude and invasive to you. If he does anything like that again I'll kick him out." Karlie looked at Taylor apologetically, trying to physch out if Taylor was offended by the non consensual hug.
"No honestly, thank you for saving me. He was not getting the hint..." Taylor laughed. "Seriously, thanks."
"No problem." Karlie smiled back.
"Hey Karlie!" A pretty, dark skinned girl called over from the other side of the bar. "We're running out of booze!"
"And I guess it's my job to go get some, huh?" The taller girl sassily replied.
"Yep!" Both girls laughed and Karlie turned back to Taylor.
"Hey, do you wanna come with me to the store to get some more drinks? You seemed pretty lonely over here before Calvin came over and bothered you."
"Uh, yeah sure." Taylor blushed. It sounded like Karlie had been watching her...Taylor found it quite adorable.
"Okay, cool." The two girls made their way over to the coat rack and grabbed their jackets before heading out into the cold night air.
---
The two girls walked down the street side by side. The night was dark and not many people were out.
"So, Taylor, tell me about yourself." Karlie initiated some conversation.
"There's not much to tell Karlie." Taylor returned.
"Oh come on, don't say that" Karlie laughed.
"Well I'm a student at NYU, I have two cats and I play guitar. I'm not very exciting." Taylor looked down at her feet, suddenly feeling very self conscious.
"What do you mean not very exciting? Cats are awesome. Music is awesome. NYU is awesome. So you're pretty awesome too." The compliment slipped off Karlie's tongue easily.
"Thanks" Taylor blushed again. "What about you?"
"Well I'm also a student at NYU, I love to code and my family have a strange obsession with the letter k." Karlie laughed.
Taylor laughed too before asking "You like to code?"
"Yeah, it's a passion of mine."
"I didn't expect that of you." Taylor chuckled at herself.
"How come?" Karlie furrowed her eyebrows.
"Well you're so..." Taylor waved her arms in the air "...y'know?" The shorter blonde blushed awkwardly. Karlie simply laughed at Taylor adorableness.
"What my, dashing good looks and amazing butt had you thinking I wasn't very smart? Tut tut Taylor, don't judge people so easily." Karlie winked at Taylor and noticed how bright red the girl was blushing.
"No no! It's just, Cara said you were a badass so I just kinda assumed you were in collage for the parties and stuff...I'm sorry." Taylor felt horrible and guilty for being judgemental.
"Hey hey hey, it's fine. Why does everyone say I'm a 'badass'? I'm not a badass! Do I intimidate people?" Karlie seemed to find the situation both hilarious and serious at the same time.
"Well you intimidate me." Taylor mumbled, not expecting Karlie to hear her.
"What, why? I'm sorry I don't mean to..."
"-No I just mean, you're so pretty and confident and tall it's hard to not find you totally self esteem crushing." Taylor admitted, not wanting to offend her possible new friend.
"You think I'm pretty?" Karlie questioned. Taylor looked into her eyes. Did Karlie's voice sound...hopeful?"
Shit shit shit Taylor thought. Fuck it, I've said it to her now...
"Yeah, actually." Karlie blushed.
"Thank you, so are you." The coder replied. Taylor smiled and punched her lightly in the arm. Karlie chuckled again.
By the time Taylor and Karlie had actually picked up the booze from the store and were walking back to the party, they'd had many laughs and light conversations. Taylor was honestly star struck at how lovely, funny and kind Karlie was.
Is Karlie flirting with me? Am I flirting with Karlie?! Oh god, she's so cute... Taylor's internal monologue was filled with thoughts all about the tall girl next to her.
"Hey Taylor..." Karlie said when they got into the lift to get to Karlie's floor. She seemed nervous suddenly. "Are you free tomorrow?"
"Uh yeah, why?"
"Well, if you wanted, I was thinking we could, yknow...go out for lunch together?" Karlie stuttered slightly and cursed at herself for coming off so anxious. She was a confident person, but the lovely girl in front of her made her feel nervous.
"Yeah. Yeah sure." Taylor looked down at her feet, blushing. Was Karlie asking her out to lunch as friends...or on a date? Their last conversation was very flirtatious but...Karlie was probably straight.
"Um, so that's a date?" Karlie tried to confirm.
OHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGOD
"I mean, only if you want it it to be a date. Ah god, I'm sorry I'm stupid..."
"No no! I'd love it to be a date, actually." Taylor blushed once more.
"Okay, cool." Karlie smiled a huge grin and Taylor couldn't help but feel like Karlie was made of pure sunshine. "After you, m'lady" the sunshine girl said very seriously, opening the door to the party for Taylor to go through.
"Why, thank you, m'lady." Taylor laughed at Karlie's ridiculousness.
"Want to dance?" The party host asked.
"Yes, definitely." The songwriter replied with ease, not really caring if she came off as over excited.
The two girls spent the rest of the night talking, laughing and dancing without a care in the world. When Taylor left to go back to her apartment across the hall, Karlie left her with a quick kiss on the cheek when saying goodbye. Both girls went to sleep giddy and excited, tingling with anticipation for their lunch date the next day.A/N
