She woke up with a stinging pain in her head. She winced and covered her head with a blanket, reaching to the other side of the bed. But it was empty and cold, as if someone who was there before, got up ages ago. She sat up. It was still rather dark outside, but she could hear the chirping of the morning birds.
-Bob?- she said, her voice husky from the sleep.
She heard Mr. Darcy's meow and a few seconds later, the cat jumped on the bed and started to purr. She patted his head and got up. She wrapped a shirt, that she borrowed from Bob, tighter around herself and made her way to the kitchen. She poured herself a cup of still warm coffe. Its temperature meant, that her boyfriend left not very long ago. She sat at the table, silently thinking about the yesterday events. It was already Monday and usually she'd be at work that day, but since Mr. Bennett was in coma, she wasn't sure how her life was going to look like. She dreaded what the future might bring.
She wasn't sure, how long she sat there. She was so deep in thought, that she didn't even hear Bob, when he came back. He peeked into the kitchen and saw her at the table. He quickly made his way to her and wrapped his arms around her, kissing the top of her head. She slightly flinched, waking up from the trance. She put her arms behind her, enveloping him.
-Hey there- he whispered.
-Hi- she responded.
He kissed her cheek and the side of her mouth. She closed her eyes and sighed.
-Where have you been?- she asked. -I was starting to get worried.
-I-I... Nowhere, really- he said nervously.
-Bob?- she turned around and looked him deep in the eye. -What is it?- she caressed his face.
He sighed and went up to the counter. He stood there for a while, trying to focus, then he spun around. He looked at her, sitting at the oaken table, on one of the upholstered chairs, with her hands in her lap and a questioning look on her face. She was so pure, innocent and gentle.
-"Is that how the angels look like?"- he thought and came up to her.
He kneeled down, in front of her, took her hands in his and brought them to his lips, planting soft kisses upon both of them.
-Bobby? What's wrong?- she asked, concerned.
He lifted his head, still holding her hands. He wasn't sure, if he could tell her. If she was strong enough to face the news. But he knew, she deserved to know.
-Baby...- he started.
-Yes?
He traced the back of her hands with his thumbs.
-I've been to hospital, today.
The room fell silent. She felt, as if her heart stopped beating and she fell into a great ocean, that started to swallow her. The world slowed down. Then, everything went back to normal and she could breathe again. She exhaled loudly, waiting.
-They called. Very early. You were asleep and I didn't want to wake you up- he continued.
He sighed and looked to his right, trying to avoid her gaze.
-What did they say?- she asked, dead worried.
He didn't respond, just hid his face in her hands.
-Bob?- she said and when he didn't look at her, she kissed the back of his head, whispering- Robert. Please, tell me.
He looked up and she saw the tears in his beautiful, blue eyes. It scared her to death.
-Is he...- she wasn't able to finish.
