Cassian's parents were killed because of the complicated political and religious aftermath of the Demon War. Had it been a century before, the Nemesai would not have dared to execute such high-ranking nobles. The order was only a small arm of the church then who mainly settled religious disputes between the other orders, advised kings and emperors on religious law, and only occasionally held tribunals over heretics. When Daibok's followers began to appear in every city though, the Nemesai took on the responsibility of hunting these traitors to the gods and everyone was happy to give them all the authority they wanted.
