I wake up groggily in an alley way.
I watch as people walk through the streets in front of the alley.
Pathetic low-lived humans.
I brush off my ripped cloak and look down.
What the Djinn am I wearing?!
I pull up my cloak and see my legs covered in a thick, dark blue cloth. My chest and torso are covered by a thin cotton sheet.
Seriously Father?
I pull my dark purple hair out of my eyes. I scan the roads in front of me, noting the humans' earthy tones.
So no purple hair either? How do I change my hair color anyway.....
I think about what Dimitrio once told me about humans.
Hair dye. I need hair dye. Speaking of Dimitro.....
I shriek out a call. A large black bird swoops into the alley and lands on the dumpster next to me.
"Dimitro?"
The bird bobs its head.
"You've got to be kidding me."
Wait until I get back home Father.
I trudge through the trash and hear a scrawny, male voice behind me.
"Well boys, I think we've found our next victim."
I sigh and turn around.
I mutter something under my breath.
"What was that?" The male pulls something sharp.
"You idiotic son of a jack-ass. Stupid mortal."
"What? Don't you know English?" The male steps forward brandishing the sharpened piece of metal in his hand.
"Maybe you'll understand this: hand over your money."
"How about no?"
"Don't play with me. Don't think because you're a freak who doesn't know English I'll go easy on you."
What the Djinn is English? I know what he's saying, and I'm replying. Stupid human.
The male rushes at me, swinging the metal at my face.
It grazes my neck and I grip the male's arm. He shrieks.
I yawn and swing his body toward the dumpster.
I hear him scream. His body goes limp and slides down to the ground.
I kick his side. "Pathetic human," I mutter.
He shrieks again and goes limp.
I roll my eyes.
Dimitrio hops onto my shoulder and pecks my head.
"Ow! What is it?"
He points his beak towards the alley's opening.
"Well, let's go."
We walk out and look out at the street.
Dimitrio pulls at my hair and points his beak at a building structure.
"Wal.... Mart," I read.
"Does it have things I need?"
He bobs his head.
I brush off my cloak again and walk in.
The inside is bright and there are humans rushing around.
Dimitrio clicks his beak towards an aisle.
I walk in that direction.
On the shelves, there are boxes of hair dye, I think. There are pictures of males and females with bright, lusciously colored hair.
Dimitrio hops off my shoulder and picks up a black box with his beak.
"Bl... Ack.... Hair..... Dye."
I look at him.
"Will this cover up this?"
I gesture toward my head.
He bobs his head.
I go down the aisle way and look at the other stuff on the shelves.
Dimitrio hops onto my head and caws.
"Go that way. There's food you can eat."
Woah.....
I follow him and see containers stacked up on top of each other behind glass doors.
I pull on the handles. Dimitrio hops onto one of the shelves and picks up a container.
"Froot..... Loops."
Dimitrio points to the other containers and I pick up the whole stack.
He caws. "Hurry out. Humans will see you."
I pick up a plastic bag off the floor to carry my food. I rush back to the alley way, avoiding the humans.
I lean back against the brick wall of the alley and open up a container.
"Ooooh, these are good."
I open up a container for Dimitrio and set it front of him.
He eagerly digs in with his beak and swallows.
"Almost as good as the food from home."
"Yeah, almost."
