Pops runs cold water over my chest.
Blood pools off and he pats down the cuts with a warm towel.
He already cracked my arm back into place, securing it down with a bandage.
"Good as new!"
Dimitrio's already asleep, his sharp beak tucked under his wing.
Pops leads me to the dining room.
He pulls a bottle out of a cabinet and throws me an apple from the fridge.
I take a bite and sit down at the dining table.
He takes a swig from the bottle, dripping some of the liquid onto his chin.
I squint at the bottle.
"What are you drinking?"
He plops down onto a chair.
"The best drink in the history of mankind: some good, old-fashioned booze."
"Booze?"
"Wine. Beer. That thing," he hiccups.
He takes another long drink and burps loudly.
"Want some? Be a man, man."
I shrug. "Ok, sure."
Back home, we had something similar to this. It was bubbly and carbonated and tasted great. Dim and I had a snuck a few drinks during a gathering.
Pops hands me the bottle and I take a drink.
It feels like burning gasoline is going down my throat. It bubbles in my stomach.
I take another drink, taking in more.
I slam the bottle onto the table, grinning stupidly.
"Tassstes great!"
Pops lets out a loud laugh. "Man, man, great, man." His words sound strange, like I'm hearing them underwater.
I smile widely and take another drink.
Pops grabs the bottle from me, almost draining it.
"Hey! Ssssave ssssome for me!"
He grins sleepily and stands up shakily.
He goes to the cabinet, pulling it open.
I grin wildly at the sight of all the bottles. More booze for me!
He staggers back over and hands it to me.
I break the seal with my teeth and take a drink. So gooooood.
Pops grabs the bottle and drinks.
"Where'ssss yourrrr father?"
I shrug. "He'ssss an idddiot. He cccccaaaan go to Hhell."
I giggle uncontrollably. "Wait....."
Pops stops drinking for a moment. "Dad was in the military." He hiccups. "He w-was great."
A tear rolls down his cheek.
"Awwwww, man, don't cry." I stumble over to him and wrap an arm around his shoulder.
"He played-played with us when he was home."
"Wh-what happened to him?"
"He died..... He was sh-shot."
Tears roll down his cheeks, and he picks up the bottle to take another drink.
I take a drink and lick my lips. "Father kicked me out."
My head feels funny and my chest hurts, like I'm doing something I wouldn't.
Another drink makes it go away.
"Kicked you out?"
"Yeah, he said I can't come back to Hell until I've proven myself." I giggle.
Pops takes a long drink, spilling some down his chin.
"What do you have to do?"
"Oh you know, the usual, kill some people, enslave others, take their soul blah, blah, blah."
Pops nods shakily. "Makes sense."
I shrug, stumbling on my feet. "Eh. I mean when your damn grandfather is freakin Satan, what'd you expect?"
I take another drink, almost draining the bottle. "Father beats me a lot. Yeah...... He wasn't reall-"
I yawn loudly.
I take a another drink. "Did you know...... I like apples? Applesssss tassste great......"
I yawn again.
Pops stands up, staggering forward.
"Time for bed."
"But there's still more to drink!" I whine. "And apples! I heard gods of death like apples."
Pops burps and stumbles to his room.
" Go to sleep, champ. 'Night, son."
" ' Night Pops."
