I shuffle into the bathroom, groaning.
Pangs of pain go through my back and I wince. My stomach gurgles and I feel it bubble up. I hang my head over the sink, feeling rancid liquid go up my throat.
I splash cold water onto my face, rubbing it.
I quickly get ready and go out for breakfast.
Pops is still asleep and I go to the fridge for some food.
I pull out a carton of milk, pouring it in a bowl.
I put it into the microwave to warm up and I look out the window.
I see a child, not much taller than my hip. He's running towards someone, smiling wildly.
A man. He's running to a man. He picks up the kid, hugging him tightly and spinning him around.
A woman follows the kid and the man kisses her.
What does it feel like? To be loved? To know you're loved? To not be smacked around every time you open you mouth? To wake up every morning, not in agony? What does that feel like? Why aren't I loved? Why aren't I waking up, safe and sound? Why don't I have someone that cares about me? Huh? Is there a reason?
I laugh. Honestly, you're an idiot. You sound like you care, Sylt. You have to break, that's the only way you why stronger, and stay that way.
I shake my head furiously.
You're an idiot. Just hurry and get to school.
I eat my cereal and Dimitrio flies in from the bathroom.
His wings are inky black, glinting dark blue. His beak is glistening and sharp.
I narrow my eyes.
"Dim?"
He perches on the edge of the dining table. "Yeah?"
"Got something you want to tell me?"
He cocks his head. "No. Why?"
I glance at his wings and his sharp claws. "Care to tell me how you grew so fast?"
"What do you mean?"
"Ravens aren't the size of 16 inch plates."
Dimitrio sighed, clacking his beak together.
"I got some energy, just y'know powering up."
"What I don't get is why you didn't tell me."
"I didn't know how you would react."
I cross my arms. "React to what?"
"How I was getting it."
I sigh, shaking my head. "Just don't tell me." I grin, slightly. "So how much energy are we talkin about?"
Dim hops on his feet. "Enough to grow an 7 inch bird into a 17 inch monster machine. And that's not even how much I have stored."
I grin wildly. "Awesome! At this rate, we'll have enough energy to at least make some weapons, or get you back to normal!"
Dimitrio flapped his wings. "Awesome!"
I grabbed my bag and Dim perched on my shoulder.
I took a deep breath and shook the cobwebs of my thoughts away.
One clear thought resonated through my head.
Energy.
