Chapter 18 ~ L is For

****

"I have a serious life question," I suddenly say.

"What's that?" Christy asks.

It's been ten minutes since our conversation and for some reason something is bugging me.

"Why haven't we stormed Pharaoh's house yet? Tim could be dead and we're out here talking about life? I don't see how this is a good plan," I say.

I thought Reba was going to have a panic attack earlier about not being able to see into everyone's minds. I think talking to Tim calmed her down.

But I don't blame her. I would have flipped too. It's scary business, knowing there's technology that can disable your powers.

Wish I had powers to disable.

"You're right, Young Charlie," Thor says, "I say we charge for the hills now!"

"No, Thor!" Natasha says, her long red hair flying, "and no, Charlie. Every plan has to start somewhere. This is our somewhere. Your friend will be extracted soon."

"And for now, Reba seems to be plenty happy with his company," Clint says.

"What about my daughter?" Peter Parker growls.

"So we're just gonna stand here? Until one of you figures out a mission?" I ask.

"This part of history is fuzzy for Appiffa. She has bits and pieces of our plan but we're trying to put it back together," Captain America says.

"That way," Christy adds, "we can reverse the plan and make the future different."

"I don't understand how you're all alive and not sick," Howie says.

"Up in the air, the only thing that almost got us was the robot bugs," Clint says, "it's everyone on the ground that was infected."

"The adults," I correct, "kids are fine."

"Exactly," Clint says.

Reba climbs out of the jet to give us a status update, "he's back at the party. Pharaoh's offering everyone a place to stay the night... Should he leave with a few of the guests?"

"No," Captain America says, "tell him he has to say."

"Yes sir," Reba says running back into the jet.

"Isn't that dangerous?" I ask, "leaving an agent in there this long?"

"Just hold on to your gun," Clint says.

"Everyone should rest. The plague has already passed through this part of the country so unless he releases a new one, we should be fine," Captain America says.

"Agreed." Many say.

"I'll take first watch," Clint says.

"Everyone else, go to the jets and fish out the supplies," Tony Stark yells, "we're going camping!"

Tonight there's a face.

There's always been a face.

He's small. Like me. But brave. The fire climbs towards me but it touches him first.

We both scream.

His screams pierce mine until they die out in the flaming embers. I can still hear him. The heat taunts me, the smell tortures me, the small figure crumbles in front of me.
