Chapter 10 ~ Who They Sent
******
"I'd like you all to meet Whitney."
We all just stood still for a moment.
"Howie," Kim says, "we're all worried about you."
"So I named the jet, what's the big deal?" Howie asks.
We were going to Texas.
My least favorite state.
Now before you get all "but I like Texas..." Let me explain. I'm sure the people in Texas are nice, but I've never been a huge fan of rodeos. Or super hot climates.
What's the point of climbing on a bull and fighting for your life? No thank you, I'll stay alive...
...I thought climbing into the jet we were apparently stealing.
Doesn't S.H.I.E.L.D watch these kids closely? I guess not. It's like they want us to take the jet or something. Sure we had to fight two or so guards but Cora "took care of everything," according to Howie.
Whatever. If S.H.I.E.L.D doesn't want to keep a close eye on us that's their problem. Our problem, is getting out of S.H.I.E.L.D undetected.
I know I said S.H.I.E.L.D didn't know we were climbing into a jet, but what about when we actually take off? There's no way we'll go undetected! That's impossible! I was nearly caught the last time I tried to run away from S.H.I.E.L.D!
Wait... *ran away from S.H.I.E.L.D.* maybe not all is hopeless.
"Calm down, Barton," Reba says.
My eyes widen. How?
"Mind reader, remember?" Reba smiles, "and FYI, I agree about the whole Texas thing. It's not my cup of tea. I prefer Minnesota in the winter."
Then you're brave.
"Thank you," she says taking the seat across from me.
Howie, like everyone had already done, tosses his overnight bag into the center of the jet. QuinJet 6657 to be exact... Or Whitney. I don't know what's so fabulous about this this particular jet but Cora seemed set on it.
It has nice leather seats, if I might say so.
And it's name is Whitney. Which isn't really important but for some reason I can remember it.
"Howie!" Cora calls from the jet's cockpit, "get up here and help me fly this thing!"
"Yes ma'am," Howie says making a headcount.
Kim's here, sitting next to me, Pete and Reba are across from us, Cora's up front, Howie's taking head count and I... Wait you already knew about those last three. Close enough.
The jet's doors closed and the engine roared to life. I could feel the jet humming silently as it picked itself off the ground with the help of Cora and Howie.
"Engage mirrors," Cora orders.
Mirrors?
Reba speaks, "the cloaking device. Makes us invisible."
