Chapter 13 ~ Just Like Kindergarten

********

Tim reluctantly shakes my hand, "dang. When you put it like that I guess I'm in."

Reba and Pete smile excitedly, along with myself. Cora rolls her eyes as if this whole thing isn't worth it. She's probably right.

Howie jolts to his feet.

"Whoa man!" Pete was just as startled as the rest of us, "what's up?"

"Cora! It's your mother!" Howie tells no one in particular.

Cora slams her fist against a button and asked, "is she dead?"

Howie quickly replies, "No. No Christy... She's doing better. They're saying it's because she's not human. That something inside of her is fighting Pharaoh's..."

Tim whispers, "Who's Christy?"

"Cora's mom. Christy Coulson Rogers," I say, "she was ill with something but apparently she's doing better."

"What did he mean when he said she wasn't human?" Tim asks.

I shrug.

"She's a Crass," Reba answers for me, "an alien."

Tim rocks in his seat, "of course she is."

"No, Timothy, nothing is quite normal anymore," Reba smiles.

"It's Tim," he mutters under his breath, "but I'm sure you already know that."

I didn't notice Cora get up but apparently Pete took her spot at the wheel to let her talk to Howie about her mother.

"So she's okay?" Cora was asking.

"I could only hear a little bit of what Cap was saying but he was telling someone your mom was doing better and that they're thinking it's her alien blood that's saving her," Howie explains.

Cora sighs in relief, "I thought I was gonna loose her out here."

Howie put his arm around Cora, "not yet, kid. Not yet."

I feel a twinge pull inside of me when they hug.

Which is weird.

........moving on.

"We won't lose your mom, Cora," Reba says, tears in her eyes.

"It's not fair," Cora pulled out of Howie's grasp, "you both lost your mom," she says to Pete and Reba, "and you shed a few tears, yet here I am complaining about my mother who is still alive."

"Who will stay alive," Pete says rubbing her shoulders kindly.

Another wince in my side.

Any other boys want to pat Cora on the back today?

Reba gasps then turns to me.

"What?" Cora asks.

I shrug.

"Nothing," Reba answers.

"Bro," Tim whispers, "your face just twitched. You okay?"

"Tim. I think I'm stressed," I reply.

He kelt his arms on his knees, "you think?"

"I don't have time for sarcasm," I say.
