Prologue
"How can you tell when someone's a sociopath?"
Deborah Pinnock looked up from the pot she was stirring on the stove to glance over at her oldest daughter Leigh Anne. Leigh Anne was wearing her usual pajamas consisting of a plain white tank and shorts with designs of monkeys on them. Her hair was tied up in a bun on top of her head and her face was makeup free. It was nights like this that Deborah would enjoy her daughter's company, especially since Leigh Anne was an outgoing girl and was barely around to visit. "Already having doubts about your roommate Jade?" She asked causing her daughter to shake her head. "Then what's going on?" The looks of nervousness caused Deborah to stop her cooking and turn fully to stare at Leigh Anne. "Leigh, are you in some trouble? Do you have a stalker?"
Leigh Anne let out a short chuckle, her almond brown eyes taking in her mother's worried expression. "Don't worry, mum, you know I can take care of myself." The look on Deborah's face showed her that she didn't believe that. "Mum, Jade and I have been taking self defense classes together and she keeps a bat at the door just in case...it's just...there's a boy..." That caused her mother's eyes to widen and her mouth to drop in a knowing "oh".
"A boy?"
Leigh Anne nodded, "A cute boy. With green eyes and curly brown hair...gorgeous dimples and a great personality."
"Well let me call the cops now and have that menacing boy arrested for having my daughter being attracted to him. Shame on that poor boy...giving my daughter wet dreams." Deborah replied sarcastically causing Leigh Anne to laugh and throw a piece of dry macaroni at her. "Hey! I'm just saying! You don't start a conversation with your mother; whom you haven't seen in a week by the way, by talking about sociopaths! Nearly gave me a heart attack."
Leigh Anne nodded and bit her bottom lip in thought. It was almost a week since she moved out of her parents' house across the city and got an apartment with her friend Jade Thirlwall from work. Leigh had just turned 21 and thought it was time she stopped depending on her parents so much and moved out; thankfully Jade had the same idea. When they looked in the paper for cheap apartments and hit the jackpot with one that was in their price range and had a great view they thought they were the luckiest gals in the world. That was until one day Jade was going to take out the trash and ran into someone she did not want to see.
Leigh Anne was on the couch reading a book her friend suggested to her when she heard a loud shriek coming from outside their apartment. "Jade!" She yelled before quickly getting up, not caring she was only in a t-shirt and panties. She grabbed Jade's bat and ran out the apartment in search of her friend. "Jade! Are you-" The words stopped right in Leigh's mouth when she spotted her burgundy haired friend on the ground picking up the trash she dropped with a raven haired guy helping her. The guy stopped to glance up at Leigh while Jade continued to hastily place the things back in the trash bag.
"'Ello." The guy said. He had hazel eyes with tan skin and wore all dark attire with a leather jacket to finish off his 'dark and mysterious' appearance. He was really attractive, that was the first thing that popped into Leigh's mind. He had the most perfect jawline and those cheekbones... "Zayn Malik. I'm your guys neighbor across the hall." He extended a hand to Leigh Anne who still held on to the bat tightly, her eyes going from him to Jade who was still on the floor picking up the trash.
