Now that it's just Corey's mom and I, we decide to have some girl time. We begin to bake pies as we get to know each other. Of course she asks about me and where I came from so I tell her everything, from growing up to being sick to my mom not talking to me anymore.

"That's just- ugh." She tuts, "How could you not love your child?"

"I don't know but she definitely taught me to never treat our kids like that." I say, truthfully. It sucks but I know now how important it is to support your kids no matter what.

"So you really haven't talked to her since that moment?" Sylvia questions and I shake my head. There's a moment or two of silence before I clear my throat.

"Sylvia? Do you think I should call her on Christmas?" I ask quietly and she sets her knife down.

"Well, I think that would make you the bigger person. And it might make you feel better about it. You didn't do anything wrong despite what she thinks." She answers

"I was pregnant maybe two years ago. They were very mad then too but they wouldn't say anything because I was sick." I say and she sucks her teeth

"Where the baby now?" She questions as we put the pies in the oven.

"Heaven." I answer and she stops

"O-Oh. I am so sorry." She stutters and I smile

"I think everything happens for a reason. She's with my daddy." I reply and she grins.

"That's a good way to look at-" Sylvia is cut off by the door slamming and footsteps. Trevor and Corey appear in the kitchen and Trevor hops up the stairs, stumbling. Corey stands across from me and his mom with a smile on his face.

"Hey, Cor." Sylvia smiles, "how was it?"

"Pretty good." He answers, laughing as he steps closer to me. I cough as I smell the stench of liquor. He looks me dead in the eyes and shakes his head.

"Oh gosh are you okay Evelyn?" Sylvia exclaims with her hand on my back

"I'm fine the dog is upsetting my allergies." I lie, glaring at Corey.

"I didn't know you were allergic!" She cries

"No it's okay, I just get a tickle. No big deal." I smile and she nods.

"Mom, we're gonna go to bed." Corey chimes and she smiles

"Okay goodnight you two." She pats my arm before Corey drags me upstairs. When we get close to his room he starts apologizing.

"No, tell me what happened." I say, shoving him into the room, "You said you were going to play hockey so why the hell do you reek like alcohol?" I spit and he sighs. He makes me sit down on the bed and I cross my arms, waiting for an answer.

"It's something we do every year. We say we're going skating but then we go to the bar and have a little fun. Trev and I hardly see each other so we just like to do our thing." Corey explains and I snort

"What does 'have a little fun' mean? Strippers? Drugs? Sex? Obviously alcohol." I say, anger evident in my voice. He begins to shush me and I get even angrier, standing up.

"Okay listen, we didn't do anything bad. We had some drinks and I helped Trevor flirt with a girl. I didn't do anything." He answers and I roll my eyes

"Ok, but you lied. To me and your mom. Don't fucking lie to me Corey." I say and he groans

"Babe-"

"No, Corey. How do I know that you weren't cheating on me?" I ask

"Because I wasn't. A few girls came up to me but I pushed them away." He states and I just roll my eyes.

"You can't be lying to me." I shout and he clenches his fists

"Babe, I'm not!" He shouts back and then sighs

"Yell at me again, I dare you." I say and he groans, hitting his bed.

"You said you were playing hockey and you went and got drunk." I spit

"You can't drink." He says quietly

"And? Because I can't drink you can't drink? If you would've told me where you were going I wouldn't be mad right now!" I explain

"Well, there's something else." Corey says, looking at the ground. I take a deep breath and sit down.

"Alright, what is it?" I ask, trying to stay calm.

"My ex was there. And she was grinding on me. And I didn't stop her, Trevor did." He whispers and my heart shatters. Tears form in my eyes but I wipe them away before they can fall.

"I knew this was gonna happen." I whisper, staring at him. He bites his lips and I can see him blinking harshly. He puts his hand on my thigh and I flinch.

"I'm sorry. I was drunk-"

"No, don't play that shit. Being drunk changes how you act, it doesn't change your morals and what is right and wrong to you." I answer and he coughs. I stand up quickly and start for the door.

"Where are you going?" Corey asks

"I can't right now, Cor." I say as I open the door.

"I love you." He whispers and I look back at him before leaving and stumbling down the stairs. The kitchen is dark and there's a single light on in the living room. I grab a blanket from the side of the couch and wrap it around me. I unlock the sliding glass doors and slide them open, jumping when the dog runs past me and outside.

"Shit." I curse, running out. I sigh when I see him sitting at the end of the porch looking out onto the yard. I shiver and sit down on the steps, petting Spooky. He whimpers and lays his head on my leg. I cry for a couple minutes and get mad, jumping to my feet. Spooky barks and all of a sudden he's trotting towards the woods.

"Dammit where are you going?" I call, running after him.
