"I do." I breathe as Corey pulls his hand away from me. The side of my head burns from where his fingertips grazed my skin.
"Great, let's go." He answers and gets out of the car. I hesitate but get out as well. He takes a hold of my hand again and guides me through the rain to the front of the cafe. He lets go of my hand to hold open the door for me and I smile, going inside. There's a sign that says 'wait to be seated' and I stand in front of it. I hear Corey's shoes on the tile behind me and then he stands next to me, putting his hand on the small of my back. An older lady comes in from the dining rooms and grabs some menus before taking us to a booth. We sit down and the women smiles at us before leaving. I look around the restaurant and it's dimly lit with candles on every table. Music plays quietly in the background.
"Corey did you know this restaurant was so... romantic?" I ask, smirking. He looks up from his menu and just shrugs.
"No idea." He mumbles and I laugh, knowing that's a lie.
"You're so cute." I say and then cover my mouth, not having meant to say that out loud. He grins at me and I blush. A waitress comes to the table and saves me from my embarrassment. She sets a bottle of wine on the table and looks at me.
"Can I see your ID please?" She asks and Corey laughs as I grab my purse from the ground. I dig through it and find my ID, handing it to the waitress. She nods and hands it back, pouring each of us some wine. I put my ID away and set my purse back down. I sigh and take a sip of the wine, raising my eyebrows at Corey because he's been staring at me this whole time.
"What's that bracelet you have on?" He asks, nodding his head at me. I look at my right hand and see he's referring to the medical bracelet I have on.
"It's just a medical tag, in case something happens to me." I shrug.
"What do you mean? Do you have an allergy or something?" He questions and I frown
"No I just have... fits sometimes. I don't wanna make you nervous, I'm fine." I assure and he just nods, knowing I don't want to talk about it. I finally look at the menu and everything is over $30. I look it over a few times and decide on the seafood dinner. The waitress comes back and we order before she hurries off again.
"This place is really nice." I comment, looking around the room again.
"It is. I've always wanted to come here." Corey says and smile
"So why didn't you?" I ask and he plays with his wine glass, ignoring me for a moment.
"Didn't find the right person to come with." He says finally, looking into my eyes. I bite my lip and try not to give into his flirting. He finally cracks a smile and I bust out laughing. We quiet down as our waitress brings us our salads. Corey and I pick at our salads and continue to talk, getting to know each other. After a while, we get our cheese fondue. When I'm not looking, Corey flicks the scolding cheese at me and I jump. I look down and see it smeared all over his suit jacket.
"Corey! This is your jacket, you're going to ruin it!" I scold and try and clean it up. He laughs and leaves me be, continuing to eat. I finish getting the cheese off his jacket and look up to see he was staring at me the whole time. I freeze and he just smiles.
"What?" I whine
"Nothing. You're just a fuckin' beauty." He says and I cover my mouth, shocked at how he could make something so stupid sounding so flattering. I can actually feel my heartbeat quicken as winks at me. He picks up his wine glass and casually takes a drink as if he didn't just stab me in the heart. I finally pull my hand from my face and smile as I continue to eat.
"Weird that there's no one else in here." Corey comments, breaking the tension.
"Well it is almost 10 pm on a Thursday so that's probably why." I laugh
"Oh, right. I forget that people have actual jobs they have to be up at 5 in the morning for." He answers and I smile because he's literally living his dream, he doesn't even consider it a job.
"You have an actual job, Corey. And I so do I. But they don't feel like jobs because we love them." I say and he nods, smiling.
"Why're you a nurse?" He asks and I'm about to answer when the waitress comes back. She takes away our cheese fondue and then brings our chocolate desert one. I grab a strawberry and swirl in around in the chocolate.
"I don't know why I wanted to be a nurse to be honest," I start, grabbing Corey's attention, "I wanted to be useful I guess, or try to be anyways."
"That's nice though. I love when people actually have a passion and do something because they love it. I've always loved hockey. Even if money wasn't involved I would still love it, not many people can say that." Corey says and I admire how his eyes light up as he talks. We continue to talk a bit more about dreams and such until Corey grabs another strawberry. I watch as he dips in the the chocolate, but he doesn't eat it. He reaches across the table and brings it to my lips. I carefully bite half of the berry off, watching his reaction. I can see him chewing on the inside of his cheek. I know he's doing all this romantic stuff to see how I react. Corey bites off the rest of the strawberry and tosses the stem down. I look at the table and see that was the last berry. He continues to stare at me and I finally blush. The waitress comes back for the last time and gives Corey the check.
"Ready?" He asks and I nod, both of us standing up. I follow him to the front of the restaurant where he pays. Yet again, Corey takes my hand and leads me outside. The rain has stopped and all you can smell is the wet pavement. We get in Corey's car and just sit for a minute.
"So what was that?" I ask quietly, looking over at him.
"What?" He answers
"That dinner. Was it making up for my nose, or a date, or just dinner?" I ask again
"Evelyn this is crazy, I know, but I feel like you're different. We haven't known each other that long but something keeps telling me not to let you go, that this could turn into something." He explains and I smile.
"So it was a date." I determine and he laughs, "What's the plan now?"
"Well we're gonna go to my place." Corey says and I laugh
"Are we now? Do I get a say in this?" I tease
"No you don't." He winks and starts his car. He pulls from the parking lot and makes his way to his house.
"Why are we going to yours?" I ask
"So I can take care of you." He says
"Corey, what're you talking about?" I laugh
"What if you wake up in the morning and your nose is swollen or something? Then you'll be with me and I'll make it okay." He answers and I roll my eyes.
"You're so cheesy." I laugh
"Course I am," Corey says, "so are you staying at my house our not?"
"Okay, I'll spend the night if you take me to my apartment to get my stuff first." I glance over at him and see him grin
"Deal. Now give me directions to your house." He agrees and I smile, leaning forward in my seat and telling him how to get to my apartment. He makes a U-turn and then starts for my complex.
