"Hey here he comes, don't turn around." Kayla panics, "I'm gonna go home okay? Call me if you need a ride later." She hugs me tightly and then pulls away, running off. I frown, that's weird even for Kayla. I turn around and sure enough Corey and some of the other guys are at the end of the hallway, walking towards me. I sigh and fix my makeup, hoping it didn't get too messed up during this catastrophe. My heartbeat quickens as he comes closer. He says goodbye to the others and comes straight to me, smiling. I notice that he has a stick and jersey in his hand. He holds them up and motions for me to take them, so I do.
"What's this?" I ask, my face heating up
"I got all the boys to sign my stick for you, but looking back maybe you don't want the stick I used to break your nose." He laughs and and I look up at him, laughing along. I hold up the jersey and see it's the one he was wearing tonight, his signature messily scribbled on the '5.'
"I love it. Thank you." I giggle. I toss the jersey over my arm and hug him. He hugs back almost instantly and I blush. We pull away from each other and Corey looks down at his feet.
"Well I'm sure you guys want to celebrate," I tuck my hair behind my ear as I talk, "So congrats on your win, you played amazing. I'm Evelyn, by the way." Corey finally looks at me and I smile before spinning around, starting to leave. He grabs my hand and I stop.
"You said I could make it up to you." He breathes and I turn around, my hand still in his.
"But you did," I motion to the jersey and stick but he cuts me off.
"I had something else in mind." He smiles and squeezes my hand. He starts running through the UC lobby, pulling me with him. I laugh as we pass by the fans who haven't left, them staring as we hurry past. Corey holds the front door open for me and I feel water on my face as I step outside. I look up at the dark sky, rain drops gathering on my face.
"It's raining!" I scream, trying to be heard over the pounding of the rain on the pavement. I look back at Corey and his face is soaking wet, but he's smiling. He takes a tighter grip on my hand and laughs as he leads me to his car. We get in and I start to giggle as I shut the passenger door. Corey faces me and laughs as well. He pulls off his suit jacket and hands it to me. I take it and throw it over my shoulders, shoving my arms in the sleeves.
"Your hair is soaking wet." I laugh and he shakes his head, causing water to flick onto me. I squeal and do it back but I get dizzy. I grab onto his arm and close my eyes.
"Whoa are you okay?" He asks, genuinely concerned.
"Oh, yea I'm fine. I get dizzy easily." I sigh, running my hand over left side of my head where my hair is shaved.
"I like the whole 'half-shaved head' thing, ya know. It seems to suit you." Corey states and I laugh, hoping he can't see the giant scar that lies underneath the short hairs.
"Okay now that we're all wet, what's your idea to make up for my broken nose?" I ask as lighting flashes in the distance. A few seconds later a crack of thunder sounds and makes the car shake.
"Well, have you ever heard of Geja's Cafe?" He questions and I close my eyes, trying to picture it.
"Isn't that the fondue place?" I ask, opening my eyes and he nods.
"That's where I'm taking you." Corey states, starting his car.
"Corey, I can't afford that." I laugh and he sighs, loudly.
"This is how I'm repaying you. I'm gonna take you to this nice ass restaurant and buy you dinner, okay?" He asks and I smile at how cute he's being.
"Wait." I say and he throws his head back against his headrest.
"What." Corey whines, laughing at the same time.
"I'm wearing a jersey and jeans. I can't wear this to a place like Geja's Cafe." I state and he smiles, lifting his head up. He looks over what I'm wearing and shrugs.
"Just keep my jacket on the whole time. And those shoes are nice so you're good." He motions to my heels and I nod.
"Alright, let's go." I giggle and he puts his car in drive, pulling from the parking spot.
"Finally." He mutters and I laugh. Corey focuses on driving for a minute and then he glances over at me.
"So, Evelyn, tell me about yourself. I'm curious about you." He says and I blush.
"Not much to be curious about. I'm Evelyn Rose Carter and I'm 27. I've been a nurse since I graduated college." I explain, leaving out a few things.
"A nurse, eh? Them stitches were nothing then right?" He laughs
"I wish. I hate stitches." I sigh.
"Me too. But for real, that's all your gonna tell me about yourself? Give me the details!" Corey teases and I cover my mouth as I giggle.
"Okay, fine. I grew up watching hockey with my brother, two sisters, and parents. I'm half-Canadian. Um, I can kind of speak Spanish. I used to play volleyball. And, uh, my favorite color is yellow." I tell him and he doesn't say anything for a minute.
"Wait so you grew up watching hockey and you played volleyball? That doesn't really make a lot of sense." Corey chuckles
"Yes I know. I was never allowed to play hockey so I picked volleyball instead." I shrug
"How come?" He asks, stopping at a red light.
"I have an older brother played hockey and my older sister did too for a short time. My mom was so excited to have another girl that she forced me to act like a lady and 'ladies don't play hockey.'" I explain, adding in air quotes. He laughs as we start driving again.
"Didn't she realize that there's a woman's league?" He asks
"No she knew but to her those girl were tomboys and she wanted me to be a girly girl. So I've never stepped foot on the ice because I refused to learn how to figure skate." I explain
"But that's would've been the closest you got to hockey." Corey states
"Yea it would've but I didn't want to be on the ice if it wasn't for hockey." I nod
"Damn." He says, pulling into the parking lot of the Cafe. I laugh and look out the window at the fancy restaurant. Corey parks and I unbuckle my seat belt.
"Are you sure this is alright? We're soaking wet still and I look like an actual mess. And it's so expensive, I don't want you to have to-" Corey tucks a piece of hair behind my ear, causing my breath to hitch as I stop talking.
"Just trust me, Ev."
