Chapter 5: Complete Idiocy
Artemis had wanted to leave for the base immediately, but he knew that they would have to go back to the manor first to prepare himself better. The trip back to Dublin would make the entire voyage about three hours.
With this done they were on their way out to the Belfast area. Redalion's base was located ten miles off the city, and if he Annmarie was still there she wouldn't be for long.
In their arsenal they had packed along three Sig Sauer's, Artemis's in the holster at his hip as it had been for years on the market in case for any need of self defence, and Butler's modified dart guns that do a lot more damage than it sounds like. The dart hits you and your passed out before you can say anything to protest it. Long story short, super efficient, super effective, and nobody gets killed, so there's not as much legal trouble if the matter ever comes up.
Speaking of which, Artemis thought, I should get back in contact with Agent Rossey. Agent David Rossey was the one Artemis contacted eight years ago when the first kidnapping took place, and now it looked like he'd be calling him again. They would probably take Redalion and hold him in the cells in the basement until enforces arrived, in which case Butler would fetch the man while the enforces waited at the door step. They did not need to come in.
He'd of coarse also have to notify them of just how insane their prisoner was. That should help explain to them his claim of 'being in Fowl's retched basement prison'.
A sign shone by an old grid road labeled 'Out Of Commission'. This was the turn.
Those signs really do keep people out of the way, unless their drunk or just idiots, Artemis thought. I think I may have a few of those somewhere from sometime. So stupidly simple but also stupidly effective.
They pulled down the lane. Only a few minutes later they arrived at what seemed as if only a home. Things aren't always what they seem though, and what this really was was the base of criminal activity Redalion had been executing for years. And of coarse there were prisoner holding cells underground.
They exited the Bentley briskly and strode towards the door. It was unlocked, so there wasn't need for Butler to bust it in. They entered with their weapons drawn and prepared for whatever the former Red Lion could throw at them.
After about five minutes they had searched the entire place and come up with absolutely nothing. The only place left was downstairs now, the place Artemis and Butler both feared most to enter and were most anxious and excited to go in to.
They opened the door, as it was locked from the outside, and entered with caution down the stairs, Butler first.
They reached the end of the staircase and in the heart of the base they found a hall and a few cells.
All empty.
Artemis holstered his weapon and entered one of the cells. There was a small blood stain on the floor in two places, but one was much, much more fresh than the other. In fact it was still a bit damp.
On the other side of the cell there was a bloodied pipe with possibly a bit of hair on it.
Artemis thought for a minute. "I've come to a conclusion." He said finally, turning to Butler. "Redalion was monitoring Poroski. I had suspected that the place was wired and so chose not to mention Ellie."
"You told him he would be safe." Butler said.
"I did, didn't I? How unfortunate."
"What?"
"Forget him, Butler. We have a larger situation on our hands right now."
"Listen to yourself! Your like a child! You, as a child. Your letting him take not only the woman you love but also the person you've grown to be. Don't let him do this to you. Don't become what you used to be. The monster that killed all those people, took all that money, nearly wiped out a lemur race!"
