Chapter 8: Square One
Artemis tapped a pen on the surface of his desk. Where to start? Yesterday, upon arriving home, Butler insisted Artemis sleep, though Artemis himself had would have preferred to stay awake. But he would need his rest, of coarse. To think straight. As straight as he could.
So now, after a cup of coffee and a nights rest that wasn't very great anyway, Artemis surrounded himself with the familiar scenery of his study. Where would he start? Well, he thought, Redalion will indubitably lay a trap. A new trap. He will need a way to lure me into the trap, therefor there will need to be a means of contact.
Of coarse! Artemis thought. Contact! He'll try to reach me! I bet he already has! He'll have emailed my account.
Artemis opened up his inbox. Sure enough, there was a new message. He opened it up. The message inside was simple and straight.
Vacir Building Vault. Midnight. Two days.
So that is where he plans to bring me, Artemis thought.
I must make sure to control the Complex.
I can't let myself be taken over, no. But will my own psychosis overpower me? It couldn't. Though it has before. So long as I keep my gun at bay, things will be fine.
No more time to think about those details, Artemis thought, her life is more important than his.
Artemis began to devise a plan. He would need to arrive and he would need guards out of the way for him and Redalion. The FBI would take part in this. He would have them there, monitoring, but not in the room. He wouldn't allow that. Redalion mustn't know of their presence. Artemis would take lead in this operation, whether they liked it or not.
I'll need to contact Rossey, Artemis thought.
He immediately picked up the phone and dialled the agents number.
"Who is this?" The voice of agent David Rossey came over.
"This is Artemis Fowl, Rossey. You do remember your investigation?"
"Fowl? I ain't got time for this right now. We have a loose and dangerous convict."
"Yes, Redalion. He's in Ireland. Actually, he may not be. But I know where he is going and am devising an operation in which we may capture him."
"We? Fowl, this doesn't quite have anything to do with you, you won't be taking part in the investigation. And how do you know this anyway?"
Artemis ignored the question. "Incorrect Rossey. For I have both information you want and a connection."
"Because you know him isn't a connection."
"I do know him, and I also know my wife who has been taken hostage by this cold blooded man and is currently with him."
"What? Fowl you should have reported this ages ago! Right, what about that Canadian girl? Have you figured if she's endangered?"
"Indeed she is, Rossey. That Canadian girl is my wife."
"Jesus Christ, your a mess. Do you have any other information."
"Lots. But I will not be giving out any of it until I am confirmed to confront Redalion."
"You're not putting your life on the line."
"Oh, well. I suppose the base of Redalion's criminal activity over twenty five years is of no importance." Artemis had run through the base second time to wipe away information of himself.
