From when they got there Matty would pull Jackie around everywhere he could manage to go. Well not necessarily pull her, he would wonder away and Jackie would look for him for a couple of minutes, find him, scold him, and he would just continue drinking.
This wasn't what Jackie thought was fun, she was basically babysitting him. She should've known that what he meant by fun wasn't really fun for her, but more fun him.
And here we go again, Jackie lost Matty. She looked around asking random people if they've seen some guy with curly hair (she could've just said Matty Healy, but she felt it would cause more attention then it should've). Unfortunately, no one has seen him so she decided to go somewhere everyone needs to go to, the restroom. There was a 70% chance he was there since the whole time they were at the festival they didn't go to the terrible portable restrooms.
Jackie scanned the group of people that were huddled into a small line waiting for the next free stall. She decided to wait at least 5 minutes to see if Matty would come out. 10 minutes passed and there was no sign of him. Panick began to rush over Jackie. She brought out her phone and tried calling him again, but it went straight to voicemail.
She started walking away until she saw smoke coming from behind the porta-potties. She walked over and saw Matty. She was relieved and also mad. Jackie moved slowly to sit next to him. Their backs against the back of the blue box. Matty had his eyes closed as he let out a puff of smoke.
"It smells like shit." Matty opened an eye then closed them again.
Jackie moved over so her back was against the gate instead of the restroom, "Then why are you here?"
"People kept bothering me." Matty shrugged and opened his eyes again then poked Jackie's leg.
"Gee, I wonder why." Jackie smiled playfully.
Matty rolled his eyes then pushed down the cigarette on the grass to light it off, "let's go get food." He stood up then held out his hand to help Jackie.
"You know what's weird?" Jackie said catching up to Matty who started walking before her.
"What?" Matty put his hands in his pockets wondering where they can eat since they're was a lot of stands.
"You're not hungover and you're not as drunk as before." Jackie shrugged.
Matty came to a sudden stop, "Well you gave me pills last night and I took a nap while I was back there."
Jackie stood in front of him, "What are we gonna eat?" Jackie followed Matty's gaze where he was looking at a red headed girl, the same shade of red as his past lover. Jackie stayed quiet not knowing what to say.
"Oh, how about In N' Out?" Jackie suggested unsure if she should changed the subject instead.
Matty looked back at Jackie and smiled, he saw the stand and he put his arm around Jackie's shoulders, "Sure why not?""I still can't believe you eat so much." Matty laughed at Jackie who was just finishing her ice cream.
"I mean, I don't know, man. I grew up eating a lot I guess?" Jackie laughed using the napkin to clean her face.
"You Americans," Matty shook his head and laughed again.
"Ah, you British." Jackie mocked Matty and laughed with her.
"Jackie, you ate two burgers!" Matty laughed sitting on the ground where there was hardly any shade.
"I know, I was there. But Coachella is also about the food too!"
Matty just laughed and pulled Jackie down to sit with him. Jackie criss-crossed her legs and rested her head on Matty's shoulder.
Matty kissed the top of her head, "How long do you want to stay?"
Jackie closed her eyes and sighed, "Doesn't matter, really." She looked at Matty who was looking ahead.
"Alright, we'll leave before it gets too late." Matty's looked over at the crowds of people walking, "What time is it?"
Jackie took her phone out from her back pocket and turned it on, "About to be six."
Matty moved Jackie and he stood up, "I'll meet you by the exit in two hours." He said before walking away and disappearing into a crowd.
Jackie groaned, standing up, and dusting herself off. She looked around deciding where to go. There was a band about to play so she went to go see them. After a performance Jackie felt hot from all the numerous bodies jumping and rubbing around and against her. So she went to go get ice cream. Then when she gets ice cream she'll go on to the line to get fries and then maybe get Pink's Hot Dogs.
Jackie waited in line for about 20 minutes and she was done with her ice cream by the time she reached the register. She got fries that had cheese and bacon on it, something Jackie enjoyed very much on fries.
So then she went over to get a hot dog.
"I've seen you a couple of times today and you've been eating each time I saw you," some guy behind her said.
Jackie turned around with her mouth full of fries and tried to smile.
"You seem to be enjoying yourself," the guy smiled showing of how handsome he really looked.
"Well I do love these fries," Jackie laughed wiping her mouth with the back of her hand, "Do you want some?" She offered the young man.
"I wouldn't want to bother your bliss." He laughed.
"No, it's fine, there's enough for us both." Jackie said walking backwards as the line got smaller. She moved her hand in front of the guy, "Get some, it looks like you want some." She smiled.
He immediately got five and ate them,
"Sorry, I'm starving." He let out a soft chuckle.
"It's okay," Jackie smiled, turned around and ordered her hot dog.
"Oh, I'll pay for it." The guy said moving next to Jackie and winked at her.
Jackie just smiled unsure of what to do. The guy paid it and ordered himself something too and walked with Jackie to wait for their food.
"You didn't have to pay for it." Jackie laughed awkwardly.
"No, no, it's completely fine with me. Plus, when you have a chance to buy a pretty girl food, you do it." The guy smiled again with confidence in his voice.
Jackie blushed, "O-oh. That's sweet. Thanks uh..." Jackie was trying to remember if he told her his name yet.
"Alex." He replied holding his hand out to shake Jackie's.
"Cool name, I'm Jackie." She shook his hand.
The worker called out their number and Alex went over to get their hot dogs. He asked Jackie if it would be okay if they sat and ate together. Jackie was okay with it.
As Jackie was eating Alex stared at her with interested eyes. Jackie just looked at him and laughed, "What?"
"You're really pretty." Alex simply stated.
"Thank you very much. You are good-looking as well." Jackie didn't know how to compliment him so she continued eating.
"Here." Alex reached his hand out to her, "It's my number, I'd love to go out with you sometime."
Jackie took the small piece of paper he held out and put it in her cross body bag, "Sounds great."
"Are you coming tomorrow?" Alex eyes widened waiting for her answer.
"Yeah, my band is playing tomorrow." Jackie shrugged, then realized she said 'her band'.
"You play in a band?!" Alex got excited and sat up.
"Oh no, sorry. I'm sort of an assistant of this band." Jackie looked down at the half eaten hot dog.
"Cool! What band?" He asked.
"The 1975." Jackie drank from the soda she had from a bit earlier.
"Cool, I heard some of their songs." Alex shrugged.
"Yeah, they're great guys." Jackie smiled thinking of Matty.
"Really? Dammit." Alex laughed and so did Jackie.
Then she remembered that she had to meet Matty around eight. "Oh fuck," Jackie stood up and checked the time on her phone and it was passed eight, "I'm sorry, Alex I have to get going- I was suppose to meet someone-"
"It's okay," Alex said standing up, "If you want I can walk you or something."
"No it's fine, I'd rather not." Jackie looked down at her feet then back up.
"I mean...okay. I'll see you tomorrow, I hope." Alex's voice became soft.
"See you tomorrow." Jackie said walking away fast. She held her hot dog in one hand and took two large bites to be finished with it and took large sips of her drink and threw the rest away.
She went over and bought two bottles of water just in case if Matty was too intoxicated. Jackie had to walk fast just in case he was ready to leave or something, and it didn't help that she was basically on the otherside of the Valley.By the time Jackie got there her legs were tired enough and she didn't see Matty. She started to think that he actually left her. She walked around a bit then saw Matty's curls in a corner so she went over.
She was about a couple feet away and heard kissing noises so she stepped back. She got mad, that's why Matty left her alone. She coughed loudly, "Matty, aren't we leaving?"
Matty pulled away from the girl and looked back at Jackie, "Yeah, yeah, I'll be right there."
Jackie glanced at the girl, it was the red headed one from earlier, what are the chances? "I'll start walking." Jackie didn't care if Matty couldn't walk straight or if he didn't know where the car was she just left straight away.Right when she got into the car she turned it on and put on the radio and began crying. Why did it hurt so much? She didn't want to love Matty. She'd much rather die than see him making out with some other girl.
Jackie wiped her cheeks, and thought that this was completely normal, jealousy is normal. So Jackie took a deep breath and tried to cry because Matty could come in.
She turned the volume a little higher on the radio and pulled her chair back so she can lay down. She covered her eyes with her arm and sighed. She felt exhausted.
Matty tapped on the window that scared Jackie. She uncovered her eyes and saw him trying to look in and stand still. She pointed to the passenger seat because there was no way she was going to let him drive, and watched him go around the front of the car. She unlocked the door and he came in.
"Why did you leave?" Matty asked turning down the volume.
"Why do you care?" She took off her bag and put it the backseat so she can put on her seatbelt and fix her seat.
"Because you're my friend that's why." Matty's words slurred, "and I care about you."
"Then you wouldn't have left." Jackie got out the parking and made her way out.
Matty stayed quiet and stared out the windshield. He didn't know what to say so Jackie put the volume up a little higher again. After an hour or so of driving Jackie looked over to Matty and shook him to wake him up.
He breathed in, "Yeah?" He stretched slightly.
"I'm going to go through a drive thru." She said getting off the freeway. And stayed quiet after that, again.
Matty nodded. They stood out the car standing across from each other and had their food on the roof of the car. Jackie finished and put her drink back inside the car and gathered her trash, "I'm going to the restroom." She said closing her door and leaving Matty alone.
Jackie came back out and Matty was still there exactly the way he was before she went inside. He glared at Jackie as she walked back to the car, she looked up at him.
He went inside the restaurant and left his food there. Jackie sighed walking over to where Matty was and picked up his trash and threw it away by a nearby trashcan and putting his drink inside.
Once Jackie was done cleaning up Matty came out and walked to the drivers side and got in. Jackie sighed and got into the passenger seat.
She put on her seatbelt and sat there waiting for Matty to drive. "Do you even have your license in California?"
"I am a 27-year-old-man of course I do." Matty said clearly now, turning on the car and started driving out the parking lot.
"Alright." Jackie took out her phone and started using it. She looked at the battery percentage and connected it to the car charger and left it alone just in case.
The radio was static so they were left in silence besides the sound of the wind outside the car. Matty put down both of the windows and started yelling.
Jackie flinched then laughed and started yelling too. She looked over at Matty who had his mouth opened wide and eyes large. He closed his eyes then started swerving into different lanes.
Jackie started laughing uncontrollably and looked at Matty again when he stopped swerving and he was staring back at her.
He smiled.
