Interview: BrinMC
Author of "Love Hurts, We Can Help"
What can we call you (name)?
I am called Brin.
Where are you from?
Well I live in an isolated, rural town in the states, but mentally I live in so many places like Hogwarts, 221 B Baker Street, a TARDIS, etc.
What is your favorite hobby?
My favorite hobby besides writing and reading would have to be helping people. I'm a bit officious and at times feel that my eagerness to help makes me seem childish, selfish (ironically). Though I do enjoy watching movies and drawing. :)
Coffee or tea?
Tea! Haha I actually based my character's, Olive Raylyn's, reaction to coffee off my own experiences. If it isn't half milk, I get extremely sick. Where I live, tea is a necessity. Most people drink iced tea with every meal, but I prefer hot Earl Gray.
What book(s) are you reading now?
Books I'm reading now? Well, I don't read too often on Wattpad, but any book I am reading will be in one of my libraries. Other than that, I am currently reading "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" and "The Adoration of Jenna Fox"; both are brilliant books!
Who are your favorite Wattpad authors?
Vaineluchia, froggiey, ChaeWinacott, DuhILoveYou, and of course you! Your stories make my heart smile :D
When and why did you start writing?
I started writing seven years ago after reading InkHeart (amazing book).
Is there a specific genre that you like to read/write?
I love reading fanfictions, comedy, fantasy, and just plain out unique stories but love writing fantasy and 'romantic' comedy.
What or who inspires you in your work?
Hmmm... what does inspire me? Oh! I love to get other opinions on where people think my story is going or what people think about characters. It definitely inspires me to have people chat me up about their plans for their stories. Helping people with their stories is a big one. Then there is the usual finding new music and watching a great movie/ TV show too.
Can you tell us a bit about your current story and why people would want to read it?
My current story is called 'Love Hurts, We Can Help'. I started writing it after watching BBC's Sherlock. (Moffat how dare you!) Season 3 is supposed to be filming in March! Anyways I digress. In my own opinion, I think people who are big fans of BBC or 'geeky' things will enjoy it for the frequent, hidden references to things like Doctor Who, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and other amazing stories. There are two key characters: Olive and Vincent. While Vincent is based off of the Sherlock Holmes archetype mixed in with my own insanity, Olive is an average 'closet nerd' who is trying to act normal around her new colleagues. The story is a mixture of comedy, mystery, 'romance', and geekery. Isn't it a perfect combination? There isn't too much else that I can say about it because I don't want any 'spoilers' getting out, but from the feedback I've been getting it's a well enjoyed story. Plus, just adding that I update about twice a week.
Is there a message for your readers in your work?
Yes there is a message of course! Haha. There are several messages in fact. I myself was once a 'closet geek' but realized that this past year I've been finding new friends who are just as geeky as I am. I mean I sent out Sherlock Valentine cards! Point is, my message is to be cool with yourself because "Look, in my opinion, the best thing you can do is find a person who loves you for exactly what you are. Good mood, bad mood, ugly, pretty, handsome, what have you, the right person is still going to think the sun shines out your ---. That's the kind of person that's worth sticking with." which includes friends (quote from Mac MacGuff off of the movie Juno). Olive hides behind the idea that she is a quiet, secluded girl, but really, she is loud, brimming with feelings, and extroverted around her friends who understand her.
And another message I'd like readers to get is that people do some crazy things. Life just works that way. Others will beat you down just to feel better because of things that they are lacking elsewhere. People will cause drama and dilemmas in your life even if you have nothing to do with it, and your heart will be peed on. I'm not going to say jump back up on the bandwagon though. Cry it out for a bit. It's natural to cry if you are sad no matter who you are; everyone does it. Just find a good group of people to support you because everything is going to happen. Yet everything is your choice or at least your reaction is always your choice. Basically, crap happens, cry for a while, get over it, and watch some Doctor Who (sorry 11 will always be my first and favorite) or Barfi.
Plus... my little bonus is that love is a special thing. Love is with someone who understands you and who even likes the things they hate about you, strangely. Love isn't what we see on movies most of the time, but I do wish it was like that for everyone. Love is a feeling, not a physical stage of life that disappears after you lose your virginity or get married. It is always changing and always changing the people that are in love. I've been in a situation where my boyfriend cheated on me (with his best friend's girlfriend), tried to get me to have sex with him, started trying to plan our marriage, threatened to kill himself if I broke up with him, and then dated and tossed away one of my best friends a month after our break up. That wasn't love. I didn't break up with him because of any of those things. It was because he didn't understand me, I didn't understand him, and I found myself growing to dislike him more and more each day. I just knew it wasn't love. So don't worry about finding someone because "the right person is still going to think the sun shines out your" butt.
Do you have any advice for other writers?
Tips for writers... let's see. Just listen to Dory "just keep swimming", except write instead. I don't think swimming will help you build a vocabulary or learn grammars rules haha. Go on adventures! Watch a movie. Read LOTS of books. Go to a social event that you would have never imagined going to. Never refuse a free brownie or cookie (unless you have suspicions about its ingredients). Wear your seat belt because you can't write if you become paralyzed. Go people watching. Okay that sounded a little creepy. I mean watch people and their reactions to events. Not every pregnant teenager has a heart attack when she finds out. Not every cheerleader is stupid. Not every nerd is a geek. You probably get what I'm saying. Get lots of sleep. It is proven that a writer is less likely to win over a dedicated reader if they don't get enough sleep. Oh and have lots of fandom families. They are always online when you need a good laugh after a bad day (Superwholock!)
Is there anything else you would like add?
Other things I would like to add... Sorry this interview was so long! It took like five Wattpad messages to type, and if you read it all, I'm extremely grateful. I do hope people enjoy reading my story. I'll be finishing it this story and starting the sequel this summer. If anyone ever needs any help with anything advice/ story help/ tips for a good read/ advertising/ critiquing/ editing/ just talking, I WANT to help. Like I said, I'm very officious because helping gives me this 'high' that I can't explain. Maybe I was meant to be a social worker? Just private message me and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
With love,
Brin
