Chapter Thirteen – Something New

Maxine

Anatomy and Physiology, the last exam for the prelims. Our Proctor told us to pass our answer sheets and questionnaires when the bell rings for dismissal. Five more minutes and we’re out of this classroom and finally have the time to relax and sleep soundly at night. Today’s Friday so most of the students are super excited to end the preliminary examinations because they have a lot of plans for the weekend. I’m off to visit Dad to our place, it’s been a long time since I visited the old man.

And there goes the life saver. The annoying sound of the dismissal bell and everyone rejoiced upon hearing it. Everyone was excited to pass their papers but me. I was the last one to pass my answer sheet and also the last one to leave the classroom. I walked silently towards the parking lot without even giving a care to the students around me. I was about to get in my car when someone covered my eyes.

“Guess who?”

“What the hell, Hale? Wait, did your last name just sounded like ‘Hell?’ Ha! Suits you! Now, remove your hands off of my eyes.” I exclaimed. He removed his hands as I told him to.

“I was just fooling around, Gates.” He looked at me with his stupid ‘Puppy Eyes.’

“Nah. That won’t work on me. Now, what do you want?”  I was getting impatient.

“Do you have plans this afternoon? I was thinking that we can grab a snack or dinner or movies, anything!”

“This is not a date, right?”

“Of course not! But if you want to consider it a date then I’m more than happy to agree.”  He gave me a foolish grin.

I went inside my car and slammed my door shut but that stupid guy stopped me and ended his hand sandwiched by my door.

“F*ck!!! What the hell, Gates???!”  He screamed while blowing some air to his hand, trying to relieve his pain.

I lowered my window and showed him a poker face without any feeling of guilt or mercy. “Suits you.”

“Wait a sec! Come on, Gates. Hear me out.” He begged.

“Speak.”

“I just want to repay you for letting me survive the Calculus exam. That’s all.”

“No thanks needed, Hale.” I started my car’s engine.

”Please. I insist.” I looked at his eyes and saw sincerity.

“Okay fine.”

“Yes! We’ll use my car. I’ll drive you around town.”

“What about mine?”

“Uhh…You can park it at your apartment. I’ll follow you there.” He told me.

“Hmm…Okay. I’ll wait for you.” I lead the way and waited for him to arrive.

I waited for 15 minutes before he appeared in front of my apartment.
