Chapter 17 // Stay Awake

I'm left astounded when Eric leaves. He normally doesn't leave without throwing a few had punches and kicks; a couple drops of blood staining the ground to keep him satisfied with his strength.
But not today. He left without even clenching his fists or stiffening his broad figure.

My mind averts to my free limbs which are now aching as I slowly bring them to my sides. I look at my wrists; bruised with deep red dents; some cuts with bright red stains my skin. It hurts to even look at them, let alone use them. I sigh and lean against the pole, instantly feeling a vast bruise on my slap where it was pressed against the pole while being tied up.

My stomach twists. I'm so weak; so vulnerable.

There is a few knocks on the door before it slowly screeches open. It feels as if someone is scratching the insides of my ears, but I don't bother trying to cover them. My hands are too sore to even lift them.

I expect Four to come with dinner, as it's already turning dark. Damn, time goes quick. In a blink of an eye I'll be laying on a table, lifeless.

Instead of seeing Four, I see Tori holding the plate of food with a tall glass of a peculiar liquid and some tubes. Oh boy.

Tori smiles gently while closing the door and walking to me. I don't bother to smile back knowing their my lips will crack again, making the dried cuts on my lips bleed again.

Tori kneels in front of me, placing her items between us.
"Nice to see you too, Tris." Her voice hints that she's been in a rush.
"Sorry, Tori."
She smiles and shakes her head.
"Don't worry about it," she says in a comforting tone, "you've been through a lot." I'm thankful that Tori's doesn't look at me as if I'm a kicked puppy; I hate sympathy.

"Eat up first, then I'll apply the medicine." Ah, so that's why she's here. But why didn't Four come with her?
I pick up the plate and quickly eat the food; a handful of raisins and some rice. Soon, I'm satisfied, I put down the plate. Tori is wearing the same outfit she wore when I first met her; black skinny jeans and tank top to show her tattoo on the back of her neck; her hair as long dreadlocks.

Her tattoo reminds of Four, the way his hidden tattoo would sneak up at the back of his neck. My mind wonders to hey Four isn't here to serve me dinner rather than Tori. Not that I'm complaining... But it's unusual.

"Tori... How come Four isn't serving dinner? Isn't that his job?" I ask, trying not to make it obvious that I'm thinking about him. But I know I failed.
Tori smirks and I glare at her.
"Well, your Lover Boy had to aid Eric to set the experimenting room for tomorrow." I stiffen as soon as she says 'tomorrow'. Right. I'm dead in a day, maybe even less than a day. Tori doesn't notice as she is turned toward her other items. My body relaxes but I'm still worried about tomorrow. Not about myself, but about my friends and family. How will they react to my death? What about my brother, Caleb? He's working for these bastards when he should be helping me escape. I wonder what his role in this scheme is.

I'm about to question Tori about Caleb but stop when I see her opening a tube filled with a lumpy white paste. The smell is strong; a fresh smell that refreshes your nose as you smell it.

"I'm going to apply this on your wounds. It's just an ointment to help speed up the heeling and reduce the pain." I nod, trying to catch up with what she's explaining over the banging headache I have.
Tori continues, "Drink this up. It'll give you energy and help your stamina." She hands me the tall glass filled with the peculiar liquid. It's a bright orange colour that worries me.
"Why do I need energy and stamina now?" I ask. "It's the evening time, I don't need any energy otherwise I'll be up the whole night."
"That's the point."
"What?! But why? Is it for the testing tomorrow?" I bombard her with questions, thinking that it's to do with my demise tomorrow.
"You're not going to be tested, Tris."
I raise my brows in both shock and confusion. Before I can bombard Tori with another whole set of questions, she speaks.
"I'll explain thoroughly after I've applied the ointment."
I nod, waiting eagerly for answers.

Silent minutes pass by as Tori gently applies the medicine on my wounds. Once she's done, I'm left with my wrists covered in ointment while Tori whiles her hand.
"It should be better in a minute or two." I nod with no emotion, yet I'm extremely relived that my physical pain will be gone. However, I still want answers.

"Um, Tori?" I ask, not wanting her to be annoyed with my stampede of questions.
Tori looks up. "Mhm?" She lays her wipe down to give her attention to me.
"You said you were going to explain to me."
"Explain what?" ... Is she trying to avoid the topic by seeming forgetful?
"Why I'm not being tested, Tori. I need to know why. This included me."
Tori nods and sighs.
"Is it bad?" I ask. Tori shakes her head.
"You will actually be more relieved than worried."
I nod, letting out a shaky breath I didn't know I was holding.
   "What is it then?"

Tori looks behind and around us to see if anyone's there. Even though she's certain that there isn't anybody, she looks bothered. She leans closer to me as if she's going to tell a secret. I lean in slightly as well.
"Tris, promise me you won't tell anybody." She whispers.
I nod my head. "I promise." I whisper as low as she did.
Tori nods and continues, "But I cannot tell you everything right now. It's too risky if you know everything now. But I promise you'll get to know everything."
   "But why?"
"I can only tell you that later. But I can only tell you that you can look forward to seeing the smile on your mother's face again."
Tori notices my eyes brighten; her lips curl into a gentle smile.

   I nod my head. "Okay."
Tori looks into my eyes. "Tris. For this, I need you to stay awake for the whole night."
   "Wait, what?"
"You cannot fall asleep. You have to be alert."
"But how? I'll knock out by the time it turns 2."
Tori lifts up the drink I doubted earlier. "Which is why I asked you to drink this."
My eyes asses the orange liquid. Vibrant and almost neon. I see little bubbles fly to the surface of the drink.

Can I trust Tori with this? I don't doubt Tori, but there's s chance that Eric and Jeanine appointed her to do this. It may contain their newest serum to test me on. Or maybe Tori is telling the truth. She's my friend, she's been there for me. But how do I know that this is not an act?

Tori notices my silence and lays the drink beside me.
   "Tris, I-"
"I'll drink it." I say confidently. There's no way Tori could betray me like this. Well, I hope.
I pick up the glass, swaying the liquid around to see that it has a lumpy thick texture unlike any normal drink. I raise the glass to my lips, smelling the drink to smell a sour but sweet smell. It smells like medicine. The worry inside me grows larger.

   Well, here goes nothing.

I tilt the glass, feeling the drink touch my lips. I taste the sourness, almost about to gag. Before I could do so, I chug down the drink until it's empty. My younger cringes at the bitter and sour flavour.

Tori giggles. "Don't worry, the taste will go in a bit."
Tori stands up along with the utensils. She smiles before heading towards the door.
"Remember to stay awake." She reminds me before leaving.

I sit in silence as it grows dark. Now I only have one priority in my mind.

   Stay awake.
