"Tris, we are the Allegiant."
The Allegiant. Where have I heard the name from before?
"We are an organisation that works against the intentions of the Erudites." Tori says. "We are a secret group. We decided to be one once that riot took place outside Erudite Headquarters last year." The riot.
Flashback
I sit, greyed, on my couch where my parents are comfortably seated, clicking through channels displayed on our old television. We aren't like some of the other factions with grand electronics and luxury in our residence. We focus on supplying the homeless or the factionless their survival needs. It's how I was brought up.
My father stops on the news channel where a woman seated in blue speaks in front of a moving screen. It shows a tsunami of people outside the Erudite Headquarters. It's a turmoil; a disaster must have occurred.
My parents avert their focus to the screen as I do to listen to the report.
"There has been a sudden riot taking place live outside the Erudite Headquarters, where a vast crowd of people demand answers from Erudite leader, Jeanine Matthews." The reporter turns to the screen behind her before it shifts to full screen. An angered sea of people waving fists in the air as yells are directed towards the building. I guess Jeanine and her people are hiding for protection.
"The reason behind this turmoil is due to a small organisation that are against the Erudite, more specifically, Jeanine Matthews. This group is known as the Allegiant. This group has reported several rumours about Matthews and her work."
The screen switches to a list where its labelled as 'Is This What You Work For?'.
"The Allegiant has rumoured that Jeanine Matthews and her scientists are secretly buying people for experiments. Apparently, these experiments include testing new products and serums on them, only to kill the subjects after."
I frown at the use of the word 'subject'. Is this really what happened?
"Matthews has concluded on her side with a response video." The screen flips to a video where Jeanine Matthews sits in her blue dress and blazer.
"Greetings, all. You may know me as Jeanine Matthews but to some others, I'm just an Erudite." No shit. "I've come to alert the public that these rumours, that have sprawled about, are not true. We do not test on the innocent people of society. We do not torture people for tests. In fact, we are working to improve the standard of society's wellbeing. Please take this into account as no more shall be spoken of the topic. Thank you." The screen switches back to the reporter.
"That was Jeanine Matthews view on the Allegiant's rumours. The crowd already seems to be dying out. That's it on The Allegiant."
Like that, the ruckus ended.
Back to present
The rumours were no rumours. They were facts. They were warnings to the people about people like Jeanine. But the people fell for the trap. They fell for Jeanine's manipulative ways.
"So they weren't rumours." I say.
"Nope. Facts." Replies George, suddenly serious.
I nod, looking around at all the members standing in front of me. They all have straight postures, as if they're ready to fight.
"Right. So who's the leader? Or is there even-"
"Me." A woman steps forward draped in a long red shawl. Her most notable feature is the long scar running front her eye to her chin. Even with the scar, she's beautiful. I recognise her as someone from Amity High.
"I'm Johanna Reyes. Leader of the Allegiant." She says formally, bringing her hand out for me to shake. As a student from Dauntless High, this seems awkward for me yet I go along. Her hand is warm, like a mother's touch.
"Nice to meet you." I say, trying to be formal. Johanna nods as the corners of her lips twitch into a small smile."Well, this train ride is gonna be a while. Let's eat, shall we?" Tori says, revealing a bag full of canned and bagged goods.
We all sit in a circle and everybody begins to snatch different bags and cans of food. I wait patiently for everyone to get what they want only to find a small box of raisins left. I huff to myself, picking up the box and picking on the specs of raisin. I see a hand reach to me holding two cans. Four.
"Here. Everyone here is greedy." He shad, handing me the cans.
"Aren't you going to eat?"
"No, not hungry."
"Bullshit. You're eating with me."
Four replies with his sexy chuckle. Man, that chuckle. It's not long into eating when I hear people jump into our section of the train. My alertness perks up instantly before Tori speaks.
"It's the rest of the group. They had to meet us at a different station."
I nod, relieved. I carry on eating while I look up to see a small crowd of people out of breath. I recognise none of them except for the brown haired man looking right at me.Peter.
I choke on a piece of fruit and slam the can down.
"What's wrong?" Tori asks, standing up next to me and laying a hand in my shoulder to calm me.
"Him. Peter. Why is he here and a part of this group?"
"He has been since we met him after you were kidnapped."
I look at Peter straight in the eye.
"Do you know who he is?" I ask, motioning to Peter. "He beat me up with aEric. He has bullied me since I was young. He was working with Jean-"
"Stop, Tris. Calm down." Four says. I look at him in disbelief and it becomes silent. All we can hear is the engine running beneath our feet.
"Are we over this now?" Peter asks, breaking the silence. "Tris, did you notice how I disagreed to do 'whatever' with the knife, like Eric instructed me to?"
I scoff and roll my eyes. "You still beat the shit out of-"
"I had to earn the trust of Eric and Jeanine."
"Do you really think I'll trust you like that?"
"Trust him, Tris." Four says, "He's right."
Really...?"Peter had beaten probably the living daylights out of you, and I saw him. Later on, he confronted me and told me about plans that Eric had told you. He earned our trust so now you can trust him." Four explains as everybody nods quickly along his words in agreement.
I turn to Four shaking my head.
"Trust isn't that easy to earn, Four. You should know that."
With that, everybody goes silent again. I don't want to be in the same room with Peter, not now. I know he isn't meant to be trusted.
"Forget the food. I'm not hungry. Give it to Peter if you trust him so much."I walk off to the next section of the train, where there's nothing but boxes covered in dust and webs. I sit on the edge of the door; my feet hanging out in the outside as land zooms past me... Or well I zoom past the land.
I can't believe they would trust Peter just because he reported some on Eric's plans. How pathetic. Even Four. He fell for Peter's trap too easily. Just like Tori. Just like the others. But not me.
Trust is difficult to earn, especially after fucking someone up for years.
