CHAPTER ONE
Lolade stood absentmindedly in front of the school gate. She felt a knot tighten in her belly. She clutched her side, her school bag slung over one of the shoulders. "Here I go" she mumbled "again!" She walked past the gate into the compound. The large compound seemed squeaky clean. "Pretty impressive for a school within this miserable locality" she said dragging her feet on the interlocked ground on purpose.
The compound was spacious, containing the building in the very middle. The building was painted in bright blue and lilac. Flowers covered the walls of the fences. It was a pretty school, actually the best in the whole of Isolo. Students in uniforms were all over the compound. some stood around making circles, talking. Others simply stayed by the balcony or walked to their classes or received queries from teachers who would rather prance around to effect the little power of discipline bestowed on them than sit in the offices apportioned to them. Lolade Felt out of place. She walked into the building, now dragging her bag on the tiled floor of the hallway. She was feeling particularly uninterested in school. She was in her final year, senior secondary school three also referred to as basic twelve.
It was questionable why she'd change school that late a time. Lolade had been out of the school's black book but somewhere along the line she felt threatened by the presence of a new girl who joined the same club she was a member of. Tolani, as the girl was popularly called posed a threat to Lolade and rather than live to be shifted to the second best, Lolade fabricated stories against Tolani. When the truth was discovered, she was landed a three week suspension from school. Her father was forced to look for another school to fit her in as he considered it an act of shame for Lola to resume in the same school after being suspended.
Lolade found her way to her locker and then arranged it. She put her school bag in and shut the locker. She was an art student, she checked her timetable. The first period was actually a free period. She checked her wristwatch; 7:43am. She had already been given a tour of the school so she headed for the hall as assembly was due in two minutes.
'C R R R R I N N G G!!!!!!!!'
The automated bell sounded. Students scrambled into the hall in their numbers. They fell into various lines apportioned to different classes. Some students, four girls and three boys walked in slowly, with authority written all over their faces. They stood behind other students.
"A student from basic nine should lead the devotion" commanded a high pitched voice.
It was one of the four girls that had walked in slowly she seemed to be the female senior prefect.
Lolade rolled her eyes in her head. Back in Wesley High, her previous school, there were no such gatherings in the name of assembly. They were addressed by the principal who would lazily sit in his office and speak to them through a device that was connected to megaphones around the school building. That way students would hear whatever was being passed across wherever they were.
" if I don't have a student presented from basic nine to lead the devotion, every one in that class gets punished" the girls voice brought Lolade back to reality.
This threat seemed to work a great deal of magic as a female student from basic nine surfaced.
All through the assembly, Lolade continued to feel like a fish out of water. At last the assembly was over and lolade headed to class. All eyes turned on her "the new girl" she heard them whisper. She didn't mind whatever she was called anyway. She sat still and watched the different characters that made up the senior class. " interesting" she thought to herself when she noticed a girl who seemed to have people gathered around her listening to whatever it was she was narrating. Lola's gaze landed on another girl who looked at her almost immediately. The girl seemed pretty weird. She had short hair which she wore in loose plaits. Her round eyes had a cold stare. She wasn't exactly beautiful yet wasn't ugly either. Lola felt chills down her spine. Lola looked away from her to a boy who was sitting on the desk. He was engrossed with the headphone on his head. He was good looking. She kept shifting gazes until she had finally had enough. The principal passed by and immediately everyone who had been standing scurried to their seats and pretended to read. A male student walked into the class
