I woke up in a situation that seemed all too familiar to me. I sat there in discomfort, wires strung from my body like extra limbs. I seemed to be in a hospital room. I was surrounded by four white walls painted with figures of animals on them, giraffes, monkeys and hippos prancing on a bed of clouds. The air reeked of sterilization swabs, wafting a burning sensation into my nose. I was then distracted by a squeezing sensation on my hand and I looked down to see someone holding it. I followed the tattoos trailing up the person's arm to lay my eyes on a rather attractive boy who looked at me with relief.
"Oh, thank God you're awake Kait," he shook his head, smiling. "You passed out again so we took you to the hospital. The doctor said it's just a side affect from hitting your head, but you're good to come home now," he spoke quietly and slowly. I was barely listening to him, all I could do was stare.
"I'm sorry, what are you talking about? And who are you?" I asked, slowly slipping my hand from his grasp. He tried to hold it tighter, but I jerked it away. I could see his body physically tense up and the look of happiness in his eyes faded. I furrowed my brows when a tear rolled down his cheek. Whoever this person is I must have meant something to them, so why can't I remember him?
"Kait, don't joke with me like that," he released almost a breathy laugh. When I didn't respond he finally clued in. "Y-You really don't remember me," he sniffled and I shook my head, apologizing. He then abruptly got up, almost knocking over the chair he sat in and walked out of the room. Shortly after he walked back in with a doctor at his side and more tears stained on his cheeks, it broke my heart.
The doctor then explained the situation over again in detail and instructed me to answer a couple of questions.
"Do you remember you're name, if so tell me it," she asked.
"Kaitlyn Mary Rivers," I responded.
"Where do you live?"
"Sunset Farms in Hudson."
"Do you have any recollection of what has happened to you over the past couple weeks?"
"No," I shook me head. What has happened to me? I remember everything being fine in my life.
"Do you remember that boy?" she pointed to the guy who was pacing back and fourth outside the room, I could see him through the blinds of the window, he was on the phone now.
"Not at all," I answered, once again almost sorry I didn't remember him.
"Alright, what is the last thing you do remember?"
"Going to lunch with my friend Theresa. It was the last day of our grade 11 exams, so we went out to celebrate... But I don't remember ever arriving," I furrowed my brows trying my best to remember, but couldn't.
These questions went on for another 10 minutes or so, until the doctor came to the conclusion of what might be wrong. Once the rest of the family arrived, thanks to that boy calling them, she began to explain the situation.
"It seems that Kaitlyn has lost all of her memory from the last year or so," she informed us.
"Well, will it ever come back?" The boy who was crying, worryingly asked.
"Most of it, but I can't tell you how long it will take. It could be tomorrow, a couple weeks, months... It's quite possible some memory may not even come back at all," she explained. "If you have any question feel free to ask or just give me a call, but other than we can discharge you today," she smiled. This was a lot to take in, to wrap my mind around. I had missed a whole year, but I felt like I hadn't, like I just woke up from a long nap instead.
I looked around the room once she left, the boy that I woke up with stood there with three other boys. One looked just like him, they must be twins, and then there were two others. One of the boys were holding hands with a girl that I recognized. It was Theresa, I felt like I haven't seen her in ages.
"Sweetie, you ready to go?" my mom asked. I nodded and she helped me up while the others grabbed the few things I had with me.
I was driving home with my mom, Grandpa, and sister, the entire ride was quiet and felt rather depressing. I just couldn't get the image of that boy's face when I told him I didn't know who he was out of my head. We arrived at the farm and I walked into the house, but I continued to watch through the kitchen window as the boys walked to the barn, kicking the dirt with their heads down. Who were they? Why are they here? And why did I mean so much to them? The boy that was holding Theresa's hand gone home, but she came home with me. They sat me down at the kitchen table, poured me some tea, and filled me in on what I couldn't remember.
"Okay honey, so over this past year a lot has changed," she grabbed my hand, brushing her thumb over it. "Our stable hand Carter left, that's where the two twins come in. They work here now and stay in the loft because their mother is living in Australia. Their names are Luke and Jai. You are good friends with them and a little more than that with Luke," my mom explained and I listened intently.
"What do you mean?" I asked, confused by the last part involving Luke.
"He is your boyfriend, and the boy you saw me holding hands with earlier is mine. His name is Daniel and he is best friends with the boys," Theresa added in.
"I have a boyfriend?" I asked in shock. From what I remember I was never really interested in relationships, they seemed pointless at my age. This was all to much to take in and feeling overwhelmed I walked out and into my room.
No wonder that boy, I believe his name was Luke, was so upset. The person he loved couldn't even remember his name. I buried my face in my hands, frustrated with the fact that I can't remember a damn thing. Theresa walked in and sat down beside me on my bed.
"I just want to remember something, anything to give me some hope," I said, my eyes began to water.
"Do you want me to keep going?" she asked hesitantly, probably worried I might freak again.
"Yes," I responded, taking a deep breath. I am going to have to know sooner or later, might as well be now.
"Beau is the older brother of the two twins, he works here as well. At the beginning he went to Australia, but got sick of it and came back here with his brothers. The three brothers, Daniel and another boy named James are in a YouTube group called the-"
"The Janoskians," I said without thinking. I didn't know what it meant, but it was obviously something good as it put a smile on Theresa's face.
"Yes that's what their group is called, good! Can you remember anything else?" she asked, excitedly.
"No sorry," I sighed.
"That's okay, well there is your hope. It's a start," she replied still happy for me. "Okay now for the reason you're in this situation. You have had quite a few falls this past year, which resulted in you to faint the other day in the first place," she explained and I actually found myself laughing at how my clumsiness got me into this mess. Once the laughter was gone and reality kicked in I started to cry and she just hugged me. I obviously had great relationships with these people and now I have to start all over and so do they. But what if they don't want to?
When I began to calm down and accepted the whole situation Theresa asked me a question that scared the shit out of me.
"Do you want to meet the boys?"
