Chapter 2: Not So Bad

Alex’s Pov.

I felt the car stopped, in the middle of the town. People were all staring at us, am I the only one noticing?! I hid my face on a pillow, twisting. Can this get anymore worse?! John got out of the car then opened the door for us. Why are there so many people out here, it’s almost midnight, shouldn’t they be in their house, sleeping and watching movies or stuff. The place was almost crowded, like it was 7 in the morning, all the stores were open, and people were doing all their usual daily stuff, some were walking and talking like it’s not 11 at night, kids were all out playing, but they all stopped when they saw our car passed by, they were staring at us like it was the first time they saw a moving-metal-thingy-with-wheels or in our language a car.

I stepped out in front of a huge-old-freaky kind of house, it was the kind of house you see in horror movies, the one when something just pops out of the corner. The house itself looks like it was going to fall apart any minute. How many centuries had this house been standing? I looked over to mom, giving him a seriously-what-the-hell look, but apparently she was too busy making friends with the people she just saw a few seconds ago.

I walked to the front porch, it had a swing and indoor plants. I cringed as I heard the floor squeak, this is going to worth tons, if you sell this in an antique store. I held the handle of the main door, I traced my hand on the beautiful carvings in it, I was pretty sure some of them are writings, I can’t actually understand, this is something. I opened the door and WOW........well duh your mom isn’t an interior designer for nothing.

The place wasn’t really that bad, it was 7 out of 10. The place was huge, just as I like it. The living room was beautiful, a fireplace was placed on the centre of the room, the sofa from home was in front of an old TV, apparently there is no cable in this place, so we can’t have our TV at home and very poor signal on phones, I might add. There was a giant stairway on both sides of the house. This is in no way connected to the outside of the house, it was breathtaking.

“You like it?” Mom asked, popping out of nowhere.

“It’s amazing” I replied with a genuine smile.

“Exactly what came to me when I first saw it” She replied smiling, then linked our arms together. “And you know what’s even better?” She added with a guess-what smile.

I laughed, mom act so childish at times.

“Hmmmm, a pony?” I joked, I always wanted a pony since I was 15, until she told me, parking lot for ponies was banned a long time ago.

“Ha-ha-ha, No” Her laugh echoed on the four walls of the house, it was kind of freaky.

“I give up!” I said, looking at her. What else can cheer me up, than going back to New York?

“Wear this” She instructed, giving me the blindfold from her pocket.

“What?” Is she seriously doing this?

“Go on” She said, then placed the blindfold in me.

“Mom!” I groaned stomping my feet like a 3 year old, yeah real mature. She gently guided me to the stairs, and went left....or right, I don’t know! If it wasn’t so dark I could tell you. After a few minutes, we finally stopped, yes minutes, this house is really huge. Mom slowly took off the blindfold, like she was teasing me, I groaned and I heard her laugh.

I adjusted my eyes to the light and I swear my breathing stopped. It was amazing, this is so beautiful. I grabbed mom and hugged her tight, this is what I always dreamed of for a room, but I knew we can’t afford it. The room was breathtaking, there was a single king bed, a wooden cabinet where I can fit, a beautiful chandler, a study table with an old computer, and the best part was the mine terrace, where you can see the whole town, is this seriously mine?

“That’s not all of it” Mom said leading me to the room and into another door. I gave her a curious look. She opened the door and Wow! I’m running out of Wow’s here. It was an enormous bathroom, it had a bath tub, a shower area and all the bathroom stuff in it, I never had a bathroom of my own, in my whole life, ever and that’s one of my wishes in life.

“Thank you, its wonderful” I said to mom with teary eyes, she smiled then gave me a quick hug.

“I’m really glad you liked it honey...Well I leave you here to pack, you could also use some rest, I know your tired.” She said with tears threatening to fall, she never liked crying in front of me, I know she wants to be strong, for the two of us.

“Thanks Mom” I said hugging her again for the last time. Then she went downstairs, after saying goodbye.

I looked around, examining everything in the room, but one thing really caught my eye, it was the painting beside the study table, it was actually nothing out of the ordinary, just a painting of a family I guess, the tall muscular man was the father, the lady in white was the mother and the little girl holding her parents hand must be the child, I looked closely the two women in the picture was really familiar, I just couldn’t put my finger on it. I stood on my toes and touch the little girl’s face, examining the text beside her, CLAUDIA. Maybe she discovered this town, after all it was named after her. After a few minutes of brain racking, I decided to just shrug it off. I wouldn’t actually get anything out of this.

I walked over to the mini terrace, with the cold breeze blowing my hair back. I looked at the scenery painted in front of me, it was beautiful, the trees, mountains and I can even see a river right there. The clouds were darkish like it was going to rain, and I can see all the people, who seemed to be getting bigger in amount, it’s almost twelve, what else would you be doing outside? I looked around examining the people I see, this is better than them looking at my very soul. They looked normal, what was I expecting? Some of them were really pretty, you know the eye catcher kind of girls, my insecurity level well surely break the scale, in my stay here. My eyes landed, on the dark side of the town, there were no lights, houses or whatsoever, just trees........and a guy smoking while leaning on his bicycle.

He was wearing a black jacket and a pair of jeans, with his hair standing up, he was built, not the huge kind, he was an average and he was kind of tall. He looked like he was a little older than me. What was he doing in there, at the middle of the night? I narrowed my eyes trying to see his features, but it was hard, there was no moon or any kind of light in his direction, well the light from the town was helping. I took a step forward, when he suddenly looked up to my direction, me being the princess, and graceful kind, I fall back my head hitting the carpet. (note the sarcasm) I immediately stood up leaning to the rail, no one saw that. Ugh! Who am I kidding?! I felt my blood rushing to my face, this is freaking embarrassing! I looked over to the guy’s direction, but saw no one there. Ah! Stupid!

I walked back to the room, closing the sliding door. I’ll pack tomorrow. I felt the bed covers and it was amazing, how the hell did mom pay for all of this? I moaned the moment, my body hit the covers, it felt bloody amazing.

I felt my eyes getting heavy. Maybe this place isn’t so bad after all.
