Chapter 8: How Can I Pretend?

" I don't know how much longer I can put up with this," Emily thought to herself," I mean he can't keep me hidden forever-eventually-someone is bound to find me and arrest him for the crimes he's done! But poor Jeff...he tries...he really does, and I think all he really needs right now is someone to keep him company-because he pretty much kills everyone he sees." As she finished the sentence in her head Jeff walked in the room, smelling like-death, and pickles. Ew.
" Jeff, why do I smell pickles?"
" I don't know," he answered," how are you feeling? Are you still dizzy?" he asked with curiosity.
" I'm fine," Emily answered," I'm a little hungry though..."
" No problem!" Jeff said excitedly," I can make you some soup! Or-or some toast, or anything you want!"
" I uh-" She paused for a moment, staring at Jeff who was holding his knife up, smiling like a maniac as usual.
" Aren't you hungry, Jeff? You haven't really been eating in days or so..."
" Don't worry about me darling, I can go a long time without eating." Jeff said. He went and sat by her and placed his knife on the couch where him and Emily were sitting on. He looked down at the floor and then back at Emily." Your so beautiful," he said," and I couldn't be anymore luckier than to have someone like you. When I was down you came and cheered me up, when I was attacked you came and visit me in the hospital and put my hand on your lips just to feel your smile-" he placed his hand on her and held it tight-" oh Emily, you mean the absolute world to me and I would do anything to protect you! Even if it means taking my own life!"
Emily didn't know what to say, honestly she was speechless with his words. Does he really mean it? Well, if he kidnapped her, brought her food and water, sheltered her, and kept her alive then obviously he does care.
Emily felt hot tears run down her face as a sign of guilt and another feeling she couldn't describe.
" My darling... Why are you crying?"
She couldn't answer him-all she could do was lay her head down on his should and cry some more. Jeff wrapped his arms around her and stroked her hair." I need to go back out tonight... I need to grab some more food for us to live." Jeff said.
" Don't leave me here alone!" Emily said," I don't wanna be alone! I wanna come with you." She said and gripped on Jeff's sleeve and sniffled.
" I'd love to take you with me, but its not safe. I need you to guard the house to make sure no punk-ass kids come and tear up our home." Jeff explained. Emily looked at him with a bit of fear in her eyes, Jeff could tell." Don't be scared! I only travel at night, you'll be sound asleep by then." he said.
" Then I won't sleep!" she said and turned away from Jeff's stare. A couple of hot tears ran down her cheek as she heard Jeff sigh in sadness; why sadness? She thought killers had no emotion, well-at least towards their victims.
" My darling you need to sleep," he said," I promised I'd take care of you, and I will by doing everything I can to keep you alive and happy." He said and held her in his arms. When suddenly they heard a noise in the kitchen. Jeff pulled out his knife and sprinted towards the kitchen only to hide in the shadows. Emily followed but instead of killing whoever was here she was going to help them escape from Jeff, she knew they didn't want to have a 'nice' little greeting from him. She rushed behind Jeff, but took a different downstairs; she discovered another way to get down to the kitchen was through a doorway that had a stair case that lead down to the kitchen, she always wonder what that door was in the kitchen.
Emily made it to the kitchen before Jeff and she looked around to see if anyone was here." Darling?" she heard Jeff say," how did you get here so fast?"
" I uh-"she paused for a moment to think of an answer-"I'm just that fast. There's some things that you don't know about me Jeff, I can be really sneaky."
" That's hot." Jeff said and snickered. Emily rolled her eyes and snickered along with him.
" I don't think there's anyone here." Emily said.
" Something fell," Jeff said," I don't know what it was but something fell."

" Ma'am I promise you we're doing the best we can to locate your daughter."
" She's been missing for almost four days! I want my baby home!" Emily's mother said. Her husband guided her into his arms and held his upset wife.
" Well we know she was obviously kidnapped," one of the cops said," but we're not sure who."
" It was that boy!" her mother accused," that boy she would talk about took her!"
" Do you remember the name?" the other cop asked.
" No, I don't." she said.
" Pretend your Emily and try to remember."
" How can I pretend?"
" Think like her."
She followed the officers advice, closed her eyes and started thinking. Her memory started kicking in.
" Mom... I'm going to go visit... oh my god!" she said as she remembered the name of Emily's kidnapper.
