Chapter 23~ I Will Wait~ Lindsay
I stood in the middle of the room, my stomach churning and my mouth dry. Why had I agreed to do this?
"Miss Brenner? Come in." I nodded and followed the officer down the hall. My hand rested on my stomach and my eyes wide as I kept my head on the cops back and nothing else.
"You'll have a few minutes to speak." He told me, I quickly dug the paper's out of my bag and handed them to him.
"Can you please give him these?" He nodded and gestured for me to lock my stuff up. I did as told before following him to the room I was supposed to talk to Jace in.
"Good luck, sweetheart." He said before heading in the other direction. I mocked him behind his back and walked over to an empty seat, staring at the phone as if it was poison. My heart started racing when Jace sat in the seat in front of me, his face scarred.
"Lindsay?" I could see him mouth my name but couldn't hear anything through the thick glass. I picked up the phone with a shaky hand and brought it to my ear.
"Lindsay? What are you doing here?" He asked while I studied the scar under his left eye.
"You don't sound happy to see me." I whispered. His expression softened and he laid his hand against the glass.
"Of course I'm happy to see you. You. . . you said in the letters that you wouldn't come." I looked away and down at my big stomach.
"I had too." Is all I could say. Ryder, Jane, and Zeke didn't even know I was here. They had been against me telling Jace about the baby, they had said it would only make him want out more.
"What's wrong? Are Jane and Ryder okay? Their baby?" He actually sounded worried. I looked back up, meeting his gorgeous eyes.
"They're fine. Jane's do in September. They want to name her Cecelia." I mentally slapped myself for changing the subject.
"That's beautiful. And what about you? How has school been? Ryder told me you've been hanging around Zeke a lot." I bit my lip. I hadn't even been going to school for the last few months. I couldn't.
"That's what I came to talk about." I whispered into the phone. I nodded at the cop behind him and he held out the ultrasound to Jace.
"What the hell? Am I looking at Ryder and. . ." His eyes flickered to the name on the back of the picture. His mouth opened and he turned to his gaze to me.
"Y. . . you're. . ." I sat in the chair, frozen. He looked back down at the ultrasound.
"Is it. . . is it mine?" I slowly nodded my head.
"Jesus, Lindsay. I'm so fucking sorry. I didn't. . . how far along are you?" His eyes kept darting from the picture then back to me. I rose from the chair, setting the phone down for a moment before pulling off my sweatshirt. He rubbed his face than started saying something. I grabbed the phone as I sat back down.
"Bryson's trying to talk his dad into letting me get out early. Since I didn't actually kill anyone, I'm only an accomplice. I. . . oh god." His voice was shaky as he ran a hand through his short brown hair.
"Will you please say something?" He finally said, his eyes dark. I put my hand against the window.
"It's a boy. I. . . I'm naming him Jason Alexander Coulter. He's do in October." I replied. He smiled at me, his eyes starting to glisten.
"I don't know what to say. I. . . I know it's selfish to ask if you'll wait for me to get out of this shit hole. B. . . but could you? Only for a couple years. If I don't get out by then I want you to forget I ever existed." I could feel a warm tear escape my eye and slip down my cheek.
