Lindsay and I shared a watery smile as we dropped our kids off for their first day of school, laughing at the deep frown across Jason's small lips.
He had been complaining about not wanting to go from the minute we'd woken him up that morning, and we all knew that the reason behind why getting him there hadn't been too hard was because he knew Cece would be right there with him, something he evidently found comfort in.
Realizing that they were already late, I crouched down, the both of them running into my open arms for a hug. "You two be good, alright?" They both nodded in response, proceeding to say their goodbyes to Lindsay afterwards, a tear streaming down her cheek as she spoke to them.
However Jason's fit didn't seize there, his complaints heard loud and clear as him and my daughter made their way toward the entrance.
"But it seems so boring!" He groaned, another laugh escaping my lips at the angered look that overpowered his expression.
Cece smiled at his behavior, linking her arm through his before placing a kiss against his cheek. "Don't forget I'm here with you, so it won't be boring, J." Her egotistic response made him grin, and he nodded in agreement, their two small figures soon disappearing into the school.
With a sigh, I turned to Lindsay, who stared at the already closed doors with watery eyes, her arms crossed over her chest. "I can't believe its already their first day in school. . ." She said as she opened the passenger door to my car, her voice quiet, almost sad.
"Yeah," I agreed, hopping into the drivers seat before shutting the door. "But its life, Linds. We just have to enjoy them while they're little before the real trouble begins."
* * *
Due to the fact that we lived next door to each other, we spent most of our free time together -- which explained why hours after the emotional occurrence of dropping off the kids, Lindsay and I stood in front of my driveway watching as Jace and Ryder taught Cece and Jason to fix a car, a smile etching to my lips at the beautiful scene ahead of me.
"Couldn't have you two just bought a car that was already built?" Lindsay asked the boys, her eyes trained on the old car in front of us, the chipped paint not the only proof of the fact that it needed a lot of work.
Ryder turned to face us, rolling his eyes. "The car isbuilt, Linds. We're just re-building it," He reasoned, crossing his arms over his chest as he took a few steps back, observing the way Jace continued to explain the kids everything. "To teach them how to work on cars and stuff. That was the whole point."
Lindsay and I shared a look before laughing, my gaze focused on my wonderful husband as I made my way toward him, proceeding to wrap my arms around his neck. "I have a feeling our little girl is gonna love cars and stuff like that," I told mentioned before pressing my lips to his, another smile tugging at my lips.
At that, I caught the sight of Jason and Cece sharing a disgusted look. "Ew, Jason, did you see that? Mommy kissed daddy. . .On the lips!" My daughter's attempt at being quiet failed miserably, and it only had all of us laughing even harder at the two kids, our eyes sparkling with amusement.
"You won't find it so gross in around ten years whenyou're kissing a boy." My words made her wrinkle her small noise, a gagging noise escaping her lips.
"Jane!" Ryder scolded me, his eyes darting between Cecelia and I, a mixture of frustration and dread crossing his features.
I rolled my eyes, poking his dimple to further annoy him, knowing that he hated when I did that. "It is going to happen someday, babe."
"I'd rather not even think about it yet." He cringed as he muttered out a response, Lindsay's body shaking in laughter at his over protective behavior.
And it was at that moment taking a look around me that I realized that though there was no such thing as perfect, the people I was surrounded by, the life I lived was my definition of perfect, and that even though my life hadn't turned out the way I had planned the day I went off to college; even though there were many ups and downs along the way, I was proud of how it turned out in the end -- that despite everything, as I looked at my beautiful family, I was content with how we ended up after all, because regardless of the fact that we didn't get our happy ever afters at the same time, the important thing was that we did get them, and it was worth everything we had to go through to get there.
