Jack's POV

"Jack! This is so amazing, I'm so proud of you!" Mark hugged me tightly after reading the cast list. He peppered my face with tiny kisses and ruffled my hair.

"This is so amazing! I can't wait!" I squealed, jumping up and down. I quickly signed off my name and started walking with Mark.

"And I can't wait to see you, Mr. Captain Hook!" Mark wrapped his arm around my shoulder. The theatre had just released the cast list for the school play, Peter Pan the Panto, and I was one of the lead roles. I talked on and on, and Mark listened to every word I said. Finally I got to my car, gave Mark a quick kiss, and climbed in. He got in his bright red car and drove off to his neighborhood.

I finally got to my apartment. I quickly locked my car and ran up the stairs to my door. I swung it open to see my mom standing in the kitchen, a drink in her hand.

"Mom! I got a lead role in the school play!" I shouted excitedly.

"You what?" She asked tiredly.

"I got Captain Hook!" I dropped my bag next to my bedroom door.

"When are rehearsals?" She pinched the bridge of her nose.

"Only an hour or two after school." I leaned against the counter.

"You're going to stay at school an extra two hours?" She looked back at me. "How are you going to find time to work?" She sighed.

"W-What?" I furrowed my eyebrows. "When did we discuss work?"

"About a month ago. You said when school started you were going to get a job." She looked at me, confusion on her face.

"I don't remember that." I looked down at my feet.

"Jack, you said you were going to get a job as a cashier at Kroger!" She took another sip of her drink.

"I can get a job when the play ends! And I'll do it over the summer!" I crossed my arms.

"Jack, I'm working 10 hour shifts every day without breaks. I need you to start supporting yourself!" She gripped the counter roughly.

"Why don't you start supporting me in what I love!" I raised my voice.

"Who bought you those clothes? Who pays for your food? Who pays for this apartment?" She started to yell as well.

"Those are just things! Why can't you support your own son?!" I shouted.

"I gave you everything you own!" He yells rang throughout the house.

"THAT'S NOT WHAT A REAL MOTHER DOES!" I screamed at the top of my lungs.

Before I knew it, there was a stinging pain on my cheek. She had slapped me. I backed up against the wall, slowly bringing my hand to my cheek. She clasped her hands over her mouth and a few tears dripped from her eyes. I slid down the wall until I was sitting. I couldn't move, I couldn't stand, and the entire world spun around me. Awful memories flashed across my mind as I stared up at her in horror.

"Jack..." She whispered. I couldn't say anything. "I'm a terrible mother..." She started sobbing. I couldn't bring myself to console her. Instead, I shakily stood up and ran out the door.

I woke up early Saturday morning, my phone buzzing next to my ear. I groaned and picked it up. Mark's beautiful face lit up the screen, and I smiled brightly.
