November 2nd, 1994

Janet pulled up to Mariah's house and Mariah hugged her. "Bye Janet, I had fun."

"Anytime girl. Just call me." Janet pulled off and Mariah took a deep breath as she walked though the door.

Tommy was waiting for her, like she expected. "Where have you been?"

"I went out to lunch." Mariah whispered.

Tommy slammed his hand on the table. "I can't hear you."

"I went out to lunch." She repeated.

"Without telling me where you went?"

"I-I'm sorry." She cowered near the door, waiting for a blow that didn't come.

Instead, Tommy got up and walked into the kitchen, presumably to go into the backyard. She hurried to the bedroom and sat down on the bed, picking up her notebook.

She would need to get back on Tommy's good side and the only way she knew how to do it was to write songs for her next album. She had to make Tommy happy, she was his wife and it was her duty to please him, her mother had made this clear in their conversations.

He hadn't hit her when she returned home, so she had to make him happy to repay him for his kindness. She owed Tommy a lot, he had given her a start in the industry and he treated alright most of the time.

What am I saying to myself?

She had resigned herself to searching for Tommy's good moments, ignoring his flaws just to keep herself sane. As she stopped to look as what she had written, she was seeing her own reality.

You look at me and see the girl
Who lives inside the golden world
But don't believe
That's all there is to see
You'll never know the real me
She smiles through a thousand tears
And harbors adolescent fears
She dreams of all
That she can never be
She wades in insecurity
And hides herself inside of me

She stopped, remembering all of the interviews where she lied about her marriage and how Tommy was her storybook ending, when in reality he was her Hell. She was afraid in her own home, she was policed by bodyguards, and was being controlled by her husband.

What kind of life is this?

December 10th, 1994

Janet was in the studio with Michael, working on their duet and she was debating on bringing up her time out with Mariah. There was so much she wanted to know, but couldn't ask.

Michael was dancing around inside the recording booth, typical of Michael when he was really into a song and she couldn't blame him. The song they had written about the media scrutiny Michael had received during the past year had come together well and Michael had hinted at it being the lead single from the album.

With such collusions don't it make you wanna scream
Your bash abusin' victimize within the scheme

Janet jumped in for her line.

You try to cope with every lie they scrutinize

Then Michael came back in while they sang in unison.

Oh brother please have mercy 'Cause I just can't take it
Stop pressurin' me
Just stop pressurin' me
Stop pressurin' me
Make me wanna scream
Stop pressurin' me
Just stop pressurin' me
Stop pressurin' me
Make me wanna scream
Stop pressurin' me
Just stop pressurin' me
Stop pressurin' me
Make me wanna scream
Stop pressurin' me
Just stop pressurin' me
Stop pressurin' me
Make me wanna scream
