As Girls by The 1975 played on the rooftop, Chelsea and I were going mental, mouthing every lyric along to our favourite song.
What I loved most about the friendship between Chels and I is that when we're together, we're both totally liberated and open to everything. This wave of carelessness swallows us whole, and we do whatever we feel like, no matter if other people around us are watching - like Michael and his friend Calum were doing right now.
I could feel them staring at us as we danced uncontrollably, but I didn't bother to meet gazes with them. We were all experiencing this moment differently, and we weren't going to disturb them, just as they weren't going to disturb us. We were all cautiously aware of each others actions, and no one was expected to socially address that.
"Hey?" Chelsea bellowed into my ear abruptly, over the music.
"Yeah?" I positioned my ear nearer to her mouth.
"Promise me something?" Her words surprised me, as this wasn't necessarily an appropriate moment to be making oaths of any kind.
"Yeah?" I repeated.
"No boy or man, or woman or whatever, will ever come between what we have right now? Because I don't want anything more than your loyalty and your trust, okay?" She smiled endearingly, her lips pursed slightly.
"Never." I nodded, pulling her in for a hug in the middle of the dance floor. She welcomed my embrace, wrapping her arms around my waist as my hands clasped together behind her neck.
"I love you, Rach." She breathed into the crook of my neck.
"I'll always love you more, Chels." I interlocked her hand with mine, kissing her knuckles before we continued to dance wildly.
"They're just girls, breaking hearts. Eyes bright, uptight, just girls."
I caught Chelsea playfully trying to trip me as my feet flailed around. As I giggled at her actions, I locked eyes with Calum who was across the dance floor. We looked at each other for what felt like years, until a girl walked up to him, affectionately running her hand down his forearm and then greeting him.
She was pretty. I had no idea who she was, but she was good-looking. I watched as she fawned over Calum, almost being irritably touchy towards him, but then I realised I didn't even know Calum, so I shouldn't care how other people act towards him. What had happened to me? I normally never cared about strangers, I usually minded my own business. There was just something about this boy that was so...interesting.
My smile must have noticeably dropped as I laid eyes on the tan brunette conversing with Calum, because Michael came up to me on the dance floor, wrapping his arm around me.
"You okay, puppy? You seem lost." He chirped with concern.
I sighed, plastering a smile back onto my face and turning to Mikey.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Dance with me?" I nudged him, Chelsea wandering away into her own space.
Michael obliged as usual, taking both of my hands in his and swaying our arms around as our feet moved in time to the music.
