Students' Statements
"He just barged in during assembly and all we saw was this man with a gun in one hand and what looked like a burning t-shirt or something in the other. For a second none of us knew what was happening, then he just threw the t-shirt and all of sudden the whole front row before the doors was on fire and everyone started screaming. You could see them, the ones who were on fire, running around and then everyone started running and you could hear him, the man, shooting into the crowd."
"He was shooting a shotgun slowly like he was on a hunt or something, just firing one after the other into the chaos and everyone was running away from him toward the back entrance. All the while you could hear the people on fire screaming and the ones he'd shot screaming and everyone was panicking, no one knew what to do or where to go only to get out."
"I was at the back and all I saw was this fireball near the main door and then everyone started screaming. At first I thought something had exploded, but then I heard the gunshots. It sounded like more explosions they were so loud and we all started running for the door. The teachers didn't know what to do and ran with us, everyone was running, trying to get away and none of us knew what was happening. It was like a film or something, everything just erupted."
"There were at least ten or so people on fire and they just ran around, running into other students or slipping over on the floor. A teacher tired to help one of them, he took off his jacket and ran at her but the man just shot him, shot him as he ran. Then he started shooting everyone, just firing into the crowd and you could hear everyone screaming and the people on fire screamed the loudest. I'll never forget the sound of them, they were screaming so much."
"We didn't know what was happening till the gunshots and most of us just thought it was an explosion or something. Someone yelled out that it was terrorists but then someone else yelled that it was a shooter, a High School shooter like in America and all of us just started running. I saw girls fall over and climb over chairs and some fell under everyone else as we all ran for the door. No one stopped to help anyone, everyone just wanted to get out and the room was all smoky from the fire and all you could hear was the screaming and the gunshots and people shouting."
"We ran out of the hall and toward the car park and some teachers were helping students climb over the fence as the gate was locked. Everyone was freaking out and no one really knew what was happening, we were all just thinking of the shootings you hear about on the news and no one wanted to be there anymore, everyone just wanted to get out. There were so many of us trying to get over the wall that people were pushing and fighting each other and everyone was scared and some girls were screaming and crying and then everyone started screaming and we heard another gunshot. I turned and saw him, the man with the gun, in the car park kneeling down to shoot at us. I was on the wall and the girl in front of me seemed to be hit 'cause she fell down as they pushed me over and I just hit the ground and started running. There were girls everywhere outside and people had stopped to help us and cars were stopping and everyone was asking what was happening in the school, then I think they heard the shots and they knew and some ran to the school to help but others just hid."
"When he came into the car park we ran toward the other gate and we could hear him shooting behind us. The gate was locked so we ran back toward the school, then we heard more gunshots to the north and thought that there might be more of them so we ran toward the reception and hid there in one of the offices. All the teachers had gone and there was no one around, then we heard him some time later. He must have gone into the reception first and Beccy wanted to run but I said we should hide.
