I heard the sound of something like glass shattering and a scream following it. I uncovered my face, letting my hands fall to my side. Looking ahead of me, there was no one there. I saw Freed down on the ground, not moving.
My wings disappeared once I landed and ran towards his fallen body. My eyes widened at his condition. He had cuts and scratches all over him and a gash on his upper arm was oozing with blood. His coat was torn in places and his green hair messy with dirt. Sitting down beside him, I brought his head onto my lap.
"Freed?" I asked. What just happened? He attacked me with his spell but then it somehow back fired and the shattering... It didn't make sense. I didn't use any defensive spell to block the attack. So how did it-
"Y/n," I blinked, abandoning my thoughts and focusing on Freed. He coughed, trying to sit up but I held his shoulders firmly to the ground.
"You need to stay down while we handle this for now," I told him. He tried to argue but didn't have the energy to.
"There's a lot of unanswered questions in my head and I don't like that one bit."
The dark barrier had vanished, revealing the guild members curiously watching us. The twin girls had the hands out, lips moving as they mumbled something. Spells, I guessed. Probably to sustain the dark wall around us.
One of the men- the scrawny guy with spiked up orange hair had two fingers pressed to the side of his head as he concentrated on something with his eyes shut. The furrows on his brow and his now bleeding lip, indicated that he was having a tough time doing whatever he was doing. They were so close to us yet we couldn't reach out to them.
Their leader looked smug with her arms folded across her chest, examining our moves like we were an experiment. The other three men stood silently by her side, each with a weapon- two swordsmen and an archer- each with a big 'T' printed on their chests.
Unlike before, I couldn't sense any magic energy coming from them. It was almost as if they had gone. But they were right there, in front of us.
Freed mumbled something, his hand pressing his side. The expression on his face showed how much pain he was in. "H-ho..olo..gruffs," I heard him mutter. My brow formed creases as I tried to figure what he was saying.
"Come again?" I asked him. He coughed again, grabbing the sleeve of my shirt with his weak hand and attempting to pull me closer.
"Ho- ol- holo- gra- ams- s," he whispered in my ear. My eyes grew wide in realization as it finally struck me. Freed gave a crooked smile, and shut his eyes. I figured it out! I mean...he did but it's the same thing!
I smiled back at him, gently laying him back down on the ground.
They weren't really there, those were holograms! That's why I couldn't exactly feel their magic energy like before. They must have left when the barrier came up.
This guild wouldn't be easy to defeat but I refused to give up.
The guy with his fingers pointed to the side of his head- that stance- it meant he used telepathy. How could I be so stupid.
The twin girls- like I saw- must have combined their powers to form the barrier so that it would last longer, for them to have enough time to go to wherever.
They must have been using special lacrimi to use their powers without actually being there!
Bickslow and Evergreen were busy with hand to hand combat- something I'm guessing was the telepathy user's doing.
"Guys! Snap out of it!" I yelled but they ignored me. Yet the question as to how Freed turned back to normal was confusing me. There had to be someone controlling him. Was that the telepathy user's doing as well?
From what I knew, telepathy could be used to plant ideas and communicate. But to control- that required a lot of magic power and could only be used on one person at a time. And from what I saw, he was using it on Evergreen. Leaving Bickslow no choice but to fight back.
He must have been the one controlling Freed, but luckily the connection was broken and maybe that's when he moved onto Evergreen.
This guild was going to tougher to beat than I thought.
If she wanted us to play the game so badly, and she had controlled Freed too, that meant she wanted Freed to win and me to die. She didn't care about the rest of us. This fight was deeper than I thought. There was something going on here. What was her plan?
Freed must have somehow fought whoever was controlling him and hit himself with his own attack instead of me. He must have known it would hit him back. Which must have caused the connection between him and his controller to shatter.
But why?
Why would anyone target us specifically? This all looked like it was planned. The game, controlling Freed, it was all part of something larger than just a small fight.
Was this related to....Kira? No. That wasn't possible.
Ugh! Why is my head hurting so much?
I pressed my palms to the sides of my head but still wasn't able to stop the pain. It felt like someone was hammering nails in my head. I let out a scream, falling to my knees and yelling for it stop.
"Arrghhhhhhhhh!" I could feel the tears in my eyes trickle down my cheeks. I pulled my hair and screamed louder but the pain didn't stop. It sent vibrations through my skull. I could feel it cracking.
Amidst all the black, I saw a lady appearing. It was blurry but I could make out her features. Black hair, black clothes. Everything black- her lips, swords, magic aura. She looked like a...demon, with her eyes glowing bright red.
The pain traveled down to my hands and soon my entire body was burning and aching. It felt like my bones were being crushed and my muscles were being twisted.
I fell to the ground, running out of energy. I was too weak. I couldn't move. The pain had stopped but my body felt numb. I couldn't feel my hands or legs. There was no more magic energy left in me.
A tear dropped down to the ground, dampening the spot, before my eyelids grew heavy and everything turned black.
Just like she wanted it, I had fallen. But so had Freed. Whatever she was planning, wasn't making any sense. I could only hope that this was all a bad dream and it would soon come to an end.
