12. Happy Birthday

Leaving my house and getting back to the RV was a little easier than finding the way to my house. I trusted Gerard more with getting us to our destination because he had lived in the RV for three years, so for him this was just like going back home.

After Gerard had finished drying his clothes, he put them back on and took several cans of food out of my cabinets. Hopefully my parents wouldn't notice. He told me to carry the food while he carried the blanket back to the RV.

It sort of disappointed me that he just kind of ignored our kiss, but he wasn't in a very great mood so I didn't make a comment or anything about it. I could wait until tomorrow or something.

Now it was dark, and we hadn't really talked all that much about earlier, other than discussing if they would know that Gerard was there. Probably, but I just tried to reassure him by pointing out that I had crossed out days on the calendar and changed clothes so they might not suspect him completely since I was obviously still alive and okay enough to bring my calendar up to date.

I couldn't stop thinking about earlier though. We took a bath together and then I had pretty much had a make out session with him afterwards. Did that make us a thing? Or was this just more of a "friends with benefits" type thing? Even though I wouldn't exactly consider Gerard my friend, but he wasn't really an enemy either.

The only thing that I wasn't confused about at this point was the fact that I found Gerard extremely attractive, and if we were both just normal people going to the same school I would be jumping at every opportunity to talk to him. Maybe even ask him out. But this was an entirely different situation, because the only reason I know him in person was because he kidnapped me. And being kidnapped by an attractive person isn't as great as it sounds, especially when that person is a serial killer. Which of course sounds maybe a little bit hypocritical coming from the girl that is making out with the serial killer that kidnapped her.

We had been sitting on the bed for a while and, not knowing what else to do, I had just been staring at the wall for about an hour.

I opened my mouth to attempt to ask Gerard what we were exactly, but when I turned my head to look at him I immediately closed it again. He was asleep and wrapped tightly in my green and black comforter. I smiled a bit and debated on going to sleep myself or just staring at the wall for a bit longer and letting my confusing thoughts cosume my mind again.

In the end, sleep sounded like a more promising idea. So I curled up next to my kidnapper and let myself be dragged into unconsciousness.

"Melanie!"

I jerked awake and my eyes fluttered open sleepily to meet Gerard's bright hazel eyes.

For once, he looked happy. Normally, his eyes were dull and empty, but today they shone brightly, and for a moment I thought he was crying and the sunlight was just reflecting off of the tears that hadn't fallen yet. But he just smiled at me and grabbed my hand to pull me out of bed.

He pulled me into a sitting position and then took the blanket that had been on me and gathered it in his arms. I knitted my eyebrows together. "What are you doing?"

His smile grew wider as he opened up a cabinet and started pulling out cans of food. "I want to take you on a date."

"A date?" Now I was confused.

"Yeah. Well, I mean if you want to consider it a date. I would understand if you didn't so if you want to it can just be a. . . Um, friendly picnic."

I smiled. "I'll consider it a date."

"Really??" He sounded surprised and excited at the same time and almost dropped the cans of food as he whipped around to look at me.

I nodded. While I didn't exactly expect my first date to be with a serial killer in the middle of the woods eating out of stolen cans of food, he was being so sweet and caring and at least he was attempting to make me feel special. Well, that's what it felt like at least.
