On this particular Sunday I was more MIA than I've been in my entire life. Helen and I were seated in a good row, not too far from the front of the church and I almost didn't know what was happening around me.
Now I know, I'm a little holy and some may prefer to call me a prude but I have my beliefs and there is nothing no one can do to change them.
"Fear!" He yelled stepping out of the podium to the front of the alter, snapping me out of my daydreams.
"My brothers and sisters can be your biggest downfall if you are not careful." He continued.
"A wise man once said :Give me one hundred preachers who fear NOTHING, but sin and Desire nothing but God... such alone will shake the gates of hell and set up the kingdom of heaven on earth."
I swallowed yet another lump of saliva. It was almost like he could see through me, in fact, for a second I thought he spoke to me directly.
"Isaiah 41:10 'So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.' " he quoted.
"Sometimes all you need to do is close your eyes and pray." He said and I shut my eyes, guilt drowning me.
Images from the previous night replaying in my head.
'Keep it.'
"Because even Mark chapter 5 verse 36 says: 'Don't be afraid; just ...believe.' The bible tells us OVER and OVER again how if our faith is Strronnng enough and the more we Believe, we shall Not Stumble because the Lord has got you."
He says and I hear an amen in the crowd and my head sinks.
"Because child always remember this, Joy runs deeper than dispair." He ends off and everyone is applauding but me. That was until I felt Helen's hand on my thigh. I turned to face her but she just looked at the front and then detached her hand to continue clapping her hands.
And I joined her. Them all.
We walked out of church and walked towards the end of the road in silence to get taxi when Helen broke it.
"Great service huh?" She said.
"Yeah." I responded
"No Katrina. You weren't even paying attention." She said and I just shut my mouth. "What's going on with you?!" She asked and I just sunk my head.
"You were physically in church, yes but your mind was in a totally different place.
You only came back to life when that new preacher started preaching. What happened last night, Kat?"
"Right now?!" I asked.
"Yes right now." She demanded.
"Last night Ty and I..." I said trailing off when Helen widened her eyes.
"Did it?!" She said.
"No." I said. "We kissed." I whispered and Helen started screaming forgetting that we were still in front of the church. I tried to cover her mouth but it was too late. Everyone was already staring.
Helen threw two gossiping ladies from the elders' council a fake smile before we continued walking away.
"Did you like it? Why didn't you tell me earlier?" She asked with a smile stretched from ear to ear. "Right, because you were too busy acting like an alien... Waaait. Did you guys do It after that? " she asked.
"NO! Shhhh."
I said with a warning glare.
"Okay chill. I just wanna know if I'm gonna be an aunt or not." She said just a little too loud, two girls on our right were starting at us strangely.
"I already told you that we didn't do anything." I said through clenched teeth.
Helen got us a taxi we hopped right in. "So what are you going to do?" Helen asked once we hit the road.
"Avoid him."
"What?Why?" Helen asked.
"Weren't you thd same person who contantly told me to be careful around Ty."
"Yeah, buh how are you going to avoid him. You still have to graduate that Philosophy class together and you guys work together, remember." She said and she was right. But I had to do what I had to do.
"I don't know but I'm going to have to do it." I said.
