Chapter 2 - I Suck at Teaching

After the morning assembly, students were expected to go to their respective classes. Mary and I walk to our classroom, where our first class, Physics, was being held at.

"Hey, have you met my friend Ruth? Ruth Montgomery?" Mary asked while we were walking.

"I've seen her last year, when I was helping out the Gaming Society club." I replied. "But we didn't talk at all then."

"Oh, you have to meet her! I'm sure you'll get along!" Mary said excitedly.

"Uhm, okay. She sounds like someone you're really fond of." I said, smiling.

"She isn't present today though, she came down with flu." Mary stated.

"Oh. Hope she gets better." I replied.

At that point, we arrived at our classroom and entered. As usual, our classmates were divided by their group of friends. We're so united, I know. Note my sarcasm. Not that there's anything wrong with being divided like that. Davina saw and approached us as soon as we entered.

"Oh my God, hey guys!" Davina greeted us, walking towards us.

Davina Lewis was one of Mary's and my friends in our section. We only became friends this year. She's an entertaining person to be with. She also fits in with almost everybody, making her popular in our batch. She's also a really happy, cheerful, and bubbly person, and she solves difficult situations logically. She has dark skin, dark brown eyes, and long black hair, and is slightly taller than me as well.

However, she suffers financial, emotional, and family problems, and honestly? I don't think she deserves all that shit, so I try to help and support her as best as I can.

"Davi! Hey!" I greeted and smiled at Davina as she hugged me and Mary.

"What's up?" Mary asked Davina.

"Nothing much." She replied. "Oh, Claire, may I please borrow your homework before Ms. Sarah comes? I just need to confirm if my answers were right."

"Oh yeah, sure. Though, I'm not confident in my answers either." I said, walking towards my seat with Mary and Davina. I placed my bag on the armchair and searched for my Physics homework.

"Here you go." I said, giving Davina the paper which contained my hard work last night. Mary then sat on her seat, which was to the left of mine, while Davina sat on the other seat beside me.

"So, Mary, have you done your homework?" I asked Mary, while placing my bag on the floor, on my left side.

"Yeah, of course I did. What do you take me for?" she answered, laughing a bit. "Though, I did have a hard time."

"So did I." I said, agreeing with her.

"Thank you so much, Claire!" Davina said, handing me back my homework.

"You're welcome." I replied, smiling at her.

Our Physics teacher, Ms. Sarah, then came in and placed her things on the teacher's table. She was our homeroom teacher as well. She was, by far, my favourite teacher ever. She made Physics understandable, and actually made it easier. She's a nice and very patient person. At first glance, you'd mistake her for a student due to how young she looks.

"Good morning, class!" she greeted, cheerily. "Please pass your homework to the person in front of you."

All of us passed our homework to the front, not without hearing someone swear, and Ms. Sarah collected them from the people seated in front. Luckily, Ms. Sarah didn't hear whoever that was. Our school's strict about those kinds of things during class. After passing our homework, our teacher then proceeded to discuss a lesson, giving us an exercise about it right after.

The bell then rang, signifying the end of a class. We stayed put because our next class was going to be in the same classroom.

"Oh, before I go, Axel? Can I have a word with you?" Ms. Sarah said, calling for Axel Beckett.

Axel Beckett. I'm not exactly one to judge, but he's a living, breathing stereotypical bad boy, from my point of view, anyway. He has the aura of one. He's intimidating, almost never smiles, and has good looks. He has short light-brown hair, and dark-brown eyes. I don't know him much personally, aside from the rumours going around for ages about his many flings and his fights. I don't hate him for it though, for all I know, those rumours could be false. Now that I think about it, he doesn't seem to have many friends.

Axel stood from his seat, and walked over to the teacher's table where Ms. Sarah was fixing her stuff.

"What's that about?" I asked Davina.

"I think it's about Axel not doing so well in Physics again." Davina replied and I nodded. This wasn't the first time Ms. Sarah talked to Axel about his grades. Though, Axel doesn't seem all that concerned.

My thoughts were then interrupted by Ms. Sarah calling me over.

"Claire? Can you please come over here for a moment?" Ms. Sarah called, making me slightly nervous. What if I was failing as well? What if she was gonna say there wasn't any hope for me? Oh God please don't let me fail!

I have a slight tendency to overthink things, okay?

I stand from my seat and walked over to Ms. Sarah and Axel, who glanced at me for a second.

"Hi, Ms. What did you need?" I asked, trying to make myself seem less nervous, which failed.

"Oh, don't worry, you're doing fine in class." she said, giving me a wave of relief. "However, I can't say the same for Axel here."

"Okay, so what does this have to do with me?" I asked politely, albeit knowing where this conversation would lead to.

"I figured that he'd need a tutor. Preferably, someone in our class. I've tried tutoring him but he wouldn't listen to me, nor make an effort to meet me after classes for extra credit." she said. "I thought that you would be a great tutor, since you're one of the top students in the class, and it would make Axel more comfortable, since you're both students."

Well, honestly I don't mind tutoring Axel, but I suck at teaching. Moreover, this was Physics we were talking about. I don't think I'd do a better job than Ms. Sarah. However, I decided to agree, since Ms. Sarah was asking me a favour and she doesn't do that often.

"Uhm...I'll try. But I'm not confident that I'd do a good job at it." I said, sheepishly. "I'm not good at teaching."

"Oh, I'm sure you'll do fine! Just give it your best, I won't blame you for trying!" she said, smiling at me. Then she turned to Axel. "I expect the same from you, Mr. Beckett. Don't make it hard for Claire to tutor you."

Axel just nodded at her.

"Okay, that will be all. Don't hesitate to ask me questions, Claire, if you don't understand something. I'll see you tomorrow!" Ms. Sarah said, as she picked her stuff up and left the classroom.

Well, this was gonna be fun. Not.
