Barely got a wink of sleep, last night. Today is a new day. New me.
BeverlyPuffy eyes and circles drooped on her face, along with a stuffy nose. When had this sudden failure of her immune system occurred? She dragged herself into the bathroom and picked up her green toothbrush. Squeezing a large blob of toothpaste on the brushes bristles she started to move the brush against her teeth. She spat out a bubble of blue paste into the marble sink and rinsed her mouth with a cold glass of water. The rusty tap gushed out a rush of freezing cold water; Beverly placed her fingers into the flow and slowly they became numb. The numbness spread from the tips of her fingers to the rest of her hands and it almost seemed as if they didn't exist. Drawing them away, she cupped her hands and a pool of water formed. Then splashing it on her clammy face, the chill was utterly refreshing.
Walking down the stairs she glanced at the family photos; it seemed years since a real grin had been plastered on her face. The photos greeted her with a tingle of warmth yet the numbness still remained. Downstairs, she went and entered the white kitchen. Pulling out the cereal from the cupboard, she poured the milk in and then the cornflakes. Cheerios. Honey flavour swirled around her tastebuds as the grainy hoops cracked against the movement of her jaw. Chewing and chewing. What a tiresome thing it became. Ungrateful little girl she was, images of starving children filled her mind and she suddenly became encouraged to eat her food.
Empty. Placing the porcelain white bowl on the countertop, it lay abandoned ; adjacent to an shining, empty steel sink.
She walked to the side grabbed her school bag and recited her planner ten times. "Tuesday. Maths. English. Science. Pe. French." Whispering to herself slowly as she checked the contents of her bag. Every book was squashed inside, in individual folders. Folders in folders, every piece of paper, scrap or important belonged in her bag. Her sister entered the room and packed her own bag. "Morning, have you seen my water bottle anywhere?.. Oh don't worry found it!" Her sister exclaimed, not waiting for Beverly's answer. Amethyst was a very eager and energetic person that Beverly truly cared about.
"Amethyst, cornflakes. It's waiting for you. Warm milk too!"Beverly ran and chased Amethyst tickling her gently. Amethyst giggled and ate her cornflakes as the steam from the milk evaporated into the air. Warm milk, the pleasant waft that filled the kitchen every morning, it reminded her of Amethyst's infant days.
Once they were both dressed and packed they both stood by the glass door. "Well, Amethyst i will see you later on. Make sure you ace those spellings!" Beverly spoke as she examined her face in the mirror. She had just had enough time to do her hair and moisture her face. Slipping on her platform school shoes she edged closer and said goodbye to her mother and sister. They both waved liked maniacs and Beverly waved a little bit trying to walk into school.
Once again, the air was bitter and her slow amble became a brisk walk.
