The second the portal closed behind us, Jeff slammed on the breaks. I still had my eyes screwed shut.
"If I had to guess," Jeff chuckled, "Somewhere in Europe...?" He turned off the engine and unbuckled his seatbelt, reaching over and unbuckling mine as well. "You can open your eyes now."
I shook my head. His arm slid behind me, and another went under my thighs, somehow lifting me up and over the console and onto his lap. "Hey.. It's over now. We're safe.."
I clung to him as soon as I felt his arms around me, holding me to his chest. I felt like a small child, my body unable to stop shaking. "It's the adrenaline wearing off." He stroked my hair, the jagged strands falling over my shoulders and face.
The shaking eventually stopped and my breathing calmed. "Where in Europe?" I lifted my head and looked around. There were no landmarks or signs, just fields and crops along with the occasional farmhouse and barn.
"Not a clue." Jeff said as I scooted off of his lap. "Do up your seatbelt." He started the engine and pulled onto a narrow dirt road.
I did as I was told, my eyes scanning the roadsides and the rolling grass hills beyond the crops. Wherever we were, it was beautiful. "Should we place bets? Fifty bucks it's Greece." I turned my head and wagged my eyebrows at him.
"You're on. I'm going with France." He held out his free hand and I shook it with a giggle.
Where we were, the sun had just begun to set, casting the road behind us in eerie darkness. I half expected the black car to appear out of nowhere, but it didn't.
The twinkling lights of a city lit the road ahead, and I didn't know that we had been driving up a hill until we flattened out and I could see the ocean. The boats docked at the marina looked like tiny white specks, but the lights that the city cast on the water made it look like it was sparkling with stars.
There was some sort of festivities going on as we entered the city, people dancing and laughing on the streets. We somehow found a place to park and Jeff, now in that form he takes around other people, had stopped a young woman, gently grabbing her shoulder. "Miss, could you please tell me what city we're in?"
The young girl, probably in her early twenties, was staring at him a little too long for my taste before she answered, twirling her hair around her finger.
"You're in Crete, sir." Her voice was sickeningly sweet. She was inching closer to him when I walked over sliding my hand into his while giving her a cold glare. Mine.
"Crete is in Greece." I looked up at him triumphantly. He seemed to have noticed my attempt at intimidation and looked overly amused by it. Jeff's eyes were on me and only on me as he turned his back to the girl and bent down, a hand going to the back of my neck.
"Your possessiveness is really cute." He chuckled, sliding an arm around my waist. I looked around, my face heating up about how intimate he was being in public when I realized that there were couples everywhere--against walls, in cars, on car hoods--locked in passionate embraces. We wouldn't be too out of place. He started walking forwards until I felt my back hit the car.
The girl had lost interest a while ago and had moved on with the rest of the crowd, but I barely noticed anyone else once Jeff's lips descended upon my own, relentless and greedy.
Like always, when he kissed me, the rest of the world was irrelevant. I don't know how he did it, but he was all I could hear, all I could taste, all I could smell. His scent of pine trees and a sharp hint of metal filled my nose calming me, but at the same time lit all of my nerves on fire. He didn't need to ask permission for his tongue to enter my mouth, he simply just took it.
This was a man I didn't mind being dominated by.
His hands roughly grabbed my hips, pressing them against his. I moaned when I felt him rub against my groin, hard in his jeans for me.
I didn't know whether I was thankful or pissed off when someone bumped into him, forcing us to break the kiss and him to press flush against me, my head smushed between his chest and the roof of the car.
Jeff just chuckled and bent to graze his teeth against my ear. "I suppose it's a good thing... If I wasn't stopped, I might've taken you right here in the middle of the street." He gently nibbled my earlobe.
My answering shudder and the way my breaths sped up at his words told him that I probably would not have minded.
"Let's get a hotel room..." He rubbed his nose up the length of my neck. Every thing he did made my knees weaker and weaker until I was at the point where my hands on his biceps were the only thing holding me up. "Think you'll be able to walk?" He laughed, pulling back to look at me. His eyes danced with amusement.
I just stuck my tongue out at him and shoved him off of me, pushing off of the car. My legs shook as I stormed away from him and I knew he could tell, but I tried to hide it anyways.
White buildings with brown roofs towered above us. The ground was uneven, and some of the businesses and houses sat on higher ground. The city was beautiful and bustling with life. I felt it energizing me, awakening my senses. I had forgotten how much I missed being among other people.
Jeff walked behind me, close enough that he could reach out and easily wrap an arm around my waist, and I knew it wasn't just so he could pull me against his chest and kiss me again, but to be able to pull me towards him incase someone tried to grab me. He was still on high alert even though we had escaped the threat. It made me uneasy.
Perceptive as ever, he noticed and sped up to walk beside me, taking my hand in his and bringing it to his lips, kissing each knuckle. I watched him, his eyes never leaving mine as he kissed them again, slower and in reverse order. I saw that primal hunger in his eyes that had I had seen earlier and it had my legs like jelly all over again.
I knew what he was doing. Sure, he was doing this because he no doubt wanted to take me to bed, but he was also distracting me, trying to take my mind off of what happened earlier, trying to cloud my thoughts with lust instead of letting them run with fear.
"This one's nice." Jeff stopped in front of a nice but modest hotel. It looked to have four rooms, two on top and two below, the top two having beautiful balconies with French doors that were flung open, white curtains billowing out.
I nodded in agreement and followed him inside, watching in amazement as Jeff spoke fluent Greek to the innkeeper, an elderly, sweet looking woman. He handed her his bank card and paid for the room, the old woman giving back his card, along with an old-fashioned skeleton key. He thanked her and took my hand, leading us towards a small, wooden staircase that was painted blue. I turned my head and gave the woman a small smile before following him up the stairs.
The hallway was white, widening out to a large room with a dark wooden door on either side. Large potted plants flanked the doors on both sides, rugs coloured with oranges and reds on the doorsteps.
Jeff led me to the room on the right and unlocked the door. The lights were already on inside, reflecting softly on the brown tiled floor. It brought us directly into the bedroom, a large, four poster bed against the the far wall. White sheer curtains hung around it. Beside the bed were those beautiful French doors that opened to the balcony which looked over the city. A nice breeze came in through them, cooling my heated skin.
Against the wall, next to where I was standing was a wooden dresser painted blue. White roses sat atop it.
"I'm going to take a shower, join me if you want to." Jeff called to me as he headed in the direction of a wooden door that was on the wall adjacent to the dresser. The door was painted the same blue as the dresser and the stairs.
I didn't say anything in answer, walking over to the massive bed and falling down onto it, rolling around on it a moment before letting out an approved sigh. I heard Jeff's chuckle before the water turned on.
I pressed against the wall, resting my forehead against it while listening to the running water. I hadn't meant to, but I let the sound lull me into a deep sleep.
