"Why do you always run late Kailie?"
It's 9:32p.m. and we were already supposed to be at the party, but I had a hair malfunction and it took some extra time to get it all tamed and looking half way decent. Which pretty much meant I had to totally rewash, blow dry and straighten my strawberry blonde hair. It irritated Mandy to be late, but what could I do. I didn't want to look like all the other freshman girls that were going out. I wanted to stand out like she did.
"Okay, I'm pretty sure I'm ready to go now." I say, standing in front of the full length mirror, straighten out my dress.
Mandy walked over to stand beside me in front of the mirror that was propped up against the brick wall of our room. Giving me a once over, she nodded in approval.
"We look perfect Kailie. Tonight will be a good night for us both I'm sure."
As we walk down the hall to the elevator, we run into another couple of girls that are going to the same party, so we obliged to walk over together. Once we got to the main floor and the girls walked out in front of us Mandy nudged my arm and whispered, "After they walk in the Frat house, wait for a few seconds so we can make our own entrance."
Works for me, I thought.
My plan for tonight was to get the feel of everything. All this being so new and out of character for me, made it kind of awkward, but I didn't want anyone to see that while I was there. As long as I could blend in and people watch, I should be perfectly fine.
On our walk over, we make small talk with the other girls and notice that there are others making their way towards the fraternity as well.
"This thing is going to be more crowded than I originally thought." I say to Mandy as she surveys the area in case we need an escape route. She would always look for one just in case something was to happen or come up.
"Tell me about it, but I guess it is one of the first parties of the school year. Go big or go home."
We make our way through the front door, which was already slightly pushed open, and the smell of alcohol immediately hits your face.
"Whoa! You could get a contact buzz just from standing here too long." I say as I reach in my silver clutch to pull out a piece of gum. "Ugh, how does it already smell like this and it's only like 10:00."
As she was stepping aside an overly handsy couple, she shouted over the music, "People probably pre-partied before they even came here Kailie. Plus, I bet at least a quarter of the alcohol that was brought in has already been spilt on the floor."
She was right. I already had to step over what looked like a crushed ice margarita on the kitchens hardwood floor when I went to get a drink. For this being my first frat party, I felt a little unnerved, something that I thought would never happen. I guess it was because Mandy had already broken away and was talking with a group of frat guys. She was always overly flirty, even being with Stephen, but he knew that was her personality and had learned to accept it.
I made my way over to the far kitchen counter looking at the abundance of alcohol that was spread out. Now I just had to decide what I wanted. Did I want a buzz so I could make sure everything stayed in order or did I want to get crazy like Mandy and let loose.
Decisions, decisions.
After watching a guy trip and fall over nothing right in front of me, I decided to go light. One of us needed to be able to comprehend what all took place tonight.
