Chapter 8

The next week and a half seemed to fly by. I was never questioned about the party, which I assumed was a great sign that Eric never saw me there. Though, the guilt of going still lingered in the back of my mind, afraid that someone would say something to him eventually. Even if anyone did, I wouldn't deny it. There wouldn't be a point in lying to him when the sole purpose of me attending was to blow off excess stress that had been piling up due to my course load. Add the three-month anniversary debacle on top of that...icing on the cake.

I shake my head, trying to clear the negative thoughts from my mind.

I needed a break.

For the past five hours, I have been cramming Mendel's Laws, genetic terminology, patterns of inheritance and countless other things into my mind, hoping to retain it all before 8 a.m. tomorrow. The past hour, unfortunately, was a waste due to my mind wandering. I practically kept rereading the same two pages over and over because once I finished, I had no idea what I had just read. Totally wasted time.

Lying back on my bed, I stare up at the blank ceiling tiles wishing tomorrow could already be over with. I loved Biology and everything that revolved around it, but my head just wasn't where it needed to be today.

My lime green cell phone vibrates on the desk next to me. An envelope that appears on the lock screen lets me know it's a text message. I look over at it, debating whether or not I want to find out who it is. The past couple of text messages I've received today were all from Mandy trying to convince me to attend another party with her tonight. A guy in her English class mentioned it to her and she was set on going. After telling her I couldn't the first time due to my test in the morning, the next few messages that followed were of emoji's containing the crying face, followed by the loudly crying face, angry face and lastly, the unicorn. Little known fact about Mandy, when she was finally finished with a conversation, she would always send a random, out of the blue emoji. It was her way of saying she was done. I always found it hilarious though and sometimes just for fun, I'd send her at least ten messages back with the most random emoji's I could find. It always lightened the mood and make her forgive me.

Rolling onto my side, I reach across the bed and lazily grab my phone off of the desk. Flopping over onto my back, I hold the phone above my face, unlock it and tap the small envelope at the bottom of the screen.

KEITH -

Just wanting to check in to make sure everything is going well with you! Haven't talked to you in a while. I have some news to tell you!

Well that was nice. I haven't heard from him in a long while. After I met Eric, I let Keith know that I wouldn't be able to text him as often as I used to because I didn't want Eric to get upset. He understood and let me know that he would always be there if I needed anything. I was glad we remained friends after our split since most couples I knew always ended up hating one another after they ended it.

Might as well.

KAILIE -

Hey! Long time, no talk! I've been doing okay. School is just stressing me out like normal. But that's what happens when I take on more than I should my first semester. I have a huge Biology test tomorrow that I've been cramming for. Finally took a break. So what's the good news??

Literally not two minutes later, he responds.

KEITH -

Yikes...well I'm sure you'll do awesome on it! Biology has always been your strong suite. Well...the good news is that I've met someone and I really like her. She just moved here and is in all my classes except one, so we've gotten to know each other well.
