Author's POV
The Valentine's Dance was approaching; Wendy and Irene were anxious to see who Mark would ask to the dance. Since Wendy had Mark for most of her classes, she could get the answer first. As they were walking to Math, Wendy asked him.
"Who are you taking to the dance?"
"Nobody."
"Really?"
"I'd rather go with my friends. Plus, we have more dances coming up. I want to spend my first dance here with my friends."
"You're too sweet."
But deep down inside, Wendy was disappointed and relieved.

It was finally time for their last class and Irene walked with Mark to Art. She asked him the same question.
"Who are you going with to the dance?"
"That's funny, Wendy asked me the same question."
Irene clenched her jaw.
"We both happen to be curious."
"Well, I haven't asked anyone to the dance. I'm not planning to either."
"Why not?"
"I'm going to the dance with my friends. No date, just friends."
Irene's POV
As long as he doesn't go to the dance with Wendy, I'm fine. Disappointed, but fine.
