"Guys, we can't just stay here. We need to see if we can find Petra. And Amber." Jesse said. "Look, the closest village is the one we left Soren in. Underleaf. We could head there."

Olivia looked up at her, brain slow as she had just been woken. Axel coughed.

"Are you guys going to give your opinions or not?" Jesse tapped her foot against the ground.

"It's a good idea. We can actually sleep on beds. They have food. Maybe Amber and Petra went there themselves." Olivia shrugged. "It's a win-win situation. We'll get stuff even if they aren't there."

Axel nodded in agreement, then coughed.

Amber dipped her burned leg into the cauldron of water that Derek had put next to her bed. The water was cold, making her shiver, but Derek said it would help the skin heal.

Ben looked at her from his bed, almost black eyes wide.

"It's rude to stare." Amber said, uncomfortable.

Ben blinked.

"That still counts as staring. I think."

Ben started twirling one finger around some of his curly hair, but kept his eyes on Amber.

Amber stared back at him, but he couldn't be glared into looking away. She decided to focus on other things, rather than feeling uncomfortable because a strange boy was staring at her.

But the only thing to focus on was sickness.

People coughing. People moaning. People...just being sick.

Plus, the room smelled of death.

Had people died here?

Amber didn't want to think about it.

The sickly girl that had called out to Derek when he was bringing Amber in started coughing violently, spasms gripping her body. It was the loudest coughing that Amber had ever heard.

Something red flew out of her mouth and landed on the floor with a splat.

Amber stared at it, horror piercing through her chest like an arrow.

The girl was coughing up her insides.

Her insides.

Derek, who had been looking after someone else, raced across the room to the girl.

"Can you stand?" His voice was calm, but his face showed differently.

The girl shook her head, then coughed up something else.

Amber closed her eyes. She didn't want to see any of this.

She could hear sometning dragging across the floor. Was Derek trying to get the girl somewhere else despite the fact she couldn't stand?

The coughing faded away. Amber opened her eyes. The girl and Derek were gone.

And Ben was still staring at her.

"Don't you have anything better to do?" Amber asked.

Ben flopped down onto his bed without saying a word. The tip of his tongue poked out from his mouth, making him look innocent.

But he still looked at her.

Amber heard footsteps, and turned her head around as far as it could go. Derek walked into her field of vision.

"Is she okay?" Amber asked.

"Dead."

"What was that?"

"That," Derek said. "Is what happens when werewolves get bitten by the Silver Endermen.

"I thought werewolf blood is stronger than whatever the, um, Silver Endermen have." Amber thought back to when Lukas got bitten.

"What makes you say that?"

"Cured a dude who got bitten with my blood."

"Where is he now?"

"Dead."

"How did he die?"

"I dunno."

Derek raised one of his eyebrows. "You thought you 'cured' him. You didn't."

Amber had trouble sleeping that night.

Dinner had been simple; bread, watermelon and milk. But that wasn't what kept her awake.

The sound of the now dead girl coughing filled her ears, even though nobody was coughing. The sight of her coughing up her insides was lodged in Amber's brain. The smell...

She closed her eyes. She knew that Derek slept in the place somewhere, waking every time someone called. He must be tired.

In the bed next to Amber's, Ben sneezed.

He wasn't mute. He just didn't talk. Derek had hinted that maybe he wasn't right in the head. Ben liked drawing, though, so Derek supplied him with a quill and paper every morning. Amber hadn't seen what Ben liked to draw, though.

What was Petra doing? Sleeping, obviously, but in the day...?

Probably helped out with jobs around the village. That's the sort of thing Petra would do.

Amber opened her eyes. She wasn't even-

Wait, was that light?

All of the lights sources were either turned off or had daylight sensors on them.

Amber sat up on her bed.

Ben was wide awake. His right palm was facing up, he held it close to his face. A ball of white light hovered above his palm.
