I was sitting and eating my lunch quietly. I had a sandwich with cheese and Nestea. Natalie had a bun and boloney. She was just eating the boloney. Abby had Goldfish crackers in a sandwich bag. Lauren had a burger.
I was finishing drinking my Nestea when the bell rang. Great. We would get our locker assignment before going outside. We had to share lockers. At my old school, only some of the grade 6'a had to share lockers. The rest of the school had their own. As Mrs. Leed went to each group, Abby and Lauren decided to be locker partners. I had no one.
Mrs. Leed came to my group. "Okay, whose your partner Lauren?"
"Abby is." Lauren answered immediately.
"Okay. Fill out this sheet. Write your locker combination and your locker number is 323," Mrs. Leed instructed. "What about you Natalie?"
Natalie answered, embarrassed "I don't have one."
"Well we have Ribsha who's away and Jerisa doesn't have a partner." Mrs. Leed said looking at the class list.
"I want to be with Ribsha." Natalie said slowly.
Mrs. Leed doubtfully asked "How about until she comes, you be with Jerisa?"
"Sure." Natalie said unhappily.
"Here's your sheet. Your locker number 324. Go fill it our with Jerisa." Mrs. Leed said, motioning for her to go. "Rosy, who's your partner?"
"I don't have one." I said quietly.
While moving from my group, she quickly replied "Okay."
"Sonia, who's your partner?" Mrs. Leed said looking at her name tag.
Sonia shyly admitted "I don't have one."
"Rosy doesn't have a partner. How about you be with her?" Mrs. Leed said, eyeing me.
Sonia thought for a second "Umm... okay."
"Great," she said, turning to me. "Rosy, Sonia over here is dying to be your partner. Is that okay?"
Secretly I was happy she wanted to be my partner. I nodded my head.
"Well, you guys are locker number 325. Here are your sheets. Go fill it out. " she instructed us, while motioning with her hands.
Sonia came over to me. "I have a lock and this is my combination."
She said pointing to a piece of paper. "Okay, 14, 30 and 17. Got it?"
"Yeah," I replied, signing my contract. I couldn't put anything other than my schedule. This was so not what I expected. I handed it back to Mrs. Leed.
"Thank you Hun." Mrs. Leed took the blue paper.
"So, can I hangout with you?" I asked Sonia.
It was an indoor recess because it was raining. We had to go to the gym.
"Sure."
"Let's go to our locker first."
"Yeah. What was our locker number?"
"Umm...... 425, I think." I said slowly.
We went in silence to our locker. We had to look for it. We finally found it near the library. Sonia pulled out her lock and she put it on as soon as we put our stuff in.
"What's the combo?" I asked
She replied, reading the piece of paper. "14, 30 and 17."
I tried opening it three times but it wouldn't open. I gave up. Sonia tried and she couldn't open it. On her 4th try, she finally unlocked our locker.
"How about we use my lock?" I asked, taking out my bag.
Sonia thought it through "Yeah, mine won't open quickly. We'll be late for class."
"Okay. My combo is 28, 16 and 25." I told her confidently, taking out my lock.
We put my lock on and went to the gym. It was kind of wet but at that point I didn't care. I met her friends. I quickly learned they were the "weird" group. She was the only one in my class out of her friends. I didn't have any friends. Maybe they could be my friends. Maybe I could pretend to act weird and fit in. I sat quietly through the rest of lunch.
