It's been a few weeks since school has started and my new friends are the greatest! I have at least one class with everyone so it's nice that I'm not alone. Walking out of Physics with Tatiana and Declan, we head to the cafeteria to meet up with the rest of the group when a huge crowd of girls surge past us into the cafeteria squealing. I look at Declan who says, "I'm not a girl so don't look at me."
I turn to Tatiana and she sighs, saying, "They must have announced the information for the first formal dance of the year. The other girls make a huge deal out of it and its really not all that great."
I laugh at all the crazy girls twittering and drag my friends to our usual table, where Danny picks me up and spins me around. The other guys laugh at us and we all sit down.
"So Jen, did you guys have formals back where you're from?" Jack asks, chewing on a fry.
"Yeah we did but my school was huge and it was more of a sports event than anything. Ours was called Homecoming, but everybody just had huge games that day: like football, volleyball, water polo, etc. so we all went to the games and the dance afterwards."
"Did you go with a special someone??" Finn asks, raising an eyebrow.
I start laughing at him and his face is priceless. The whole tables reaction was priceless!
"Hell no! I just went stag."
"Stag?" Derek asked.
"It's American for alone"
"Ohhhh...." the entire table chorused.
"Hey freak gimme a fry" I commanded Jack as he cowered in mock fear as I pretended to be intimidating.
"Just don't hurt meee!" he pouted as I swiped two. hah I'm a rebel.
Soon the bell rang and Danny walked with me to pre-calc again. In the hallway, he turned to me and asked, "So you've never been asked to a dance before?"
Blushing, I replied "Yeahhh... nobody has asked me but it's really fun going stag."
"Hah you Americans and your cute slang." he chuckled as I hit his arm lightly.
"Hey do you want to come to the beach and surf with us? we can have a bonfire afterwards." he asks hopefully.
Uh-oh. Nobody knows that I'm a mermaid. NOBODY. I'm gonna have to find an excuse.
"Uhh maybe I'll have to ask my mom what she has planned for this Friday. We might be busy."
His face fell and he muttered something before opening the door for me as we walked in to the class.
