Ok, so in my English class, we've been studying The Odyssey and the Hero's Journey, and part of this is watching a movie called "O Brother, Where Art Thou?". Now, as we all know (or at least SHOULD know), the movies chosen for the curriculum are typically crap. Like, teachers just have a knack for picking the worst movies to show during lessons (or at least my teachers have a knack for it). However, this movie was surprisingly good for both the unit and as a stand alone film.
For those of you in the dark, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" is an adaptation of Homer's "The Odyssey" set in rural Mississippi during The Great Depression. Weird concept, yes, but it works rather well given the material. The acting is done well (George Clooney in particular does quite a good job as Emmert (This film's version of Odysseus)), the writing's good and fits the time the movie's trying to convey to the audience, and it's rather faithful to Homer's epic.
However, one of my favorite aspects of the film is the soundtrack. Given the time the movie's set in, it's mostly made up of old time and folk country music, and it's all done really well (it's probably just me though. I'm one of the only people I know who actually likes country music :/ ). And one of the best pieces of the OST is the film's cover of "You Are My Sunshine".
On a completely different note, I've been obsessed with this song recently. Seriously, "You Are My Sunshine" is one of the main definitions of "Simplicity at it's best". At the same time, however, it's so sad when you actually listen to the lyrics.
This version in particular is my favorite rendition of the song.
One of these days, I want to do my own cover of the song, but my voice is crap on a microphone...FUCK!
