We were in our house for about three months when I started experiencing a lot of neck pain. I ignored it and moved on with my daily life. (Oh yeah, did I mention that I had started school by then? Well I did. I went to WindyBrooke Middle School. I was twelve at the time, so I was in sixth grade.) But, over time my neck started to swell and turn purple. It also got hard to breath and I was gasping for breath just by walking up a flight of stairs. My parents started to worry about me and they would often ask me if I was okay. I would hide my pain and tell them I just had a rough day. I began to wear clothing that would cover my swollen neck so that no one would tease me or anything like that. I was worried about myself, but I tried not to complain or make it seem to obvious. I thought it would just go away and leave me be, but it continued for months after.
Three months later, I was in the ER. I was confused and dazed. I didn't know where I was or what happened. I slowly became aware of where I was and I freaked out. It's probably just a broken bone! I thought, trying to comfort myself. That's happened before. I scanned my body, looking for a cast. No cast? So I hadn't broken anything. What's wrong with me? I asked myself. A nurse walked in to check my vitals and as she checked, I inquired her.
"Why am I here?" I asked her.
"Your airways were blocked and you couldn't breathe." She started. "We are still trying to find out what is wrong with you."
"What!?? How could tha-"
"Vanessa!" I heard someone yell. I looked at the doorway. A male doctor stood there and gestured vigorously for Vanessa(the nurse) to go over to him. They looked like they were having an intense conversation, and that made me worried! Are they talking about me? I thought. Is something wrong with me? Finally, they were done talking, and Vanessa and the doctor left the room for a little while.
She came back in with my parents. They looked nervous, as if they were about to hear some bad news. Vanessa pulled up two chairs next to my hospital bed and my parents took a seat. She shut the door gently and sat down in her own chair.
"We have just gotten some lab results back..." She said.
"Carly has," She paused and sighed.
" What is it? What do I have?" I said, almost crying.
My parent sat on the edges of their seats.
"Carly has developed Thyroid Cancer..."
The room was silent.
